Question: I recently got a Saturday detention at my school from a teacher for laughing in class. I was wondering if this Saturday detention will affect my future college application. I have never gotten in any trouble in my life. This is the only time I got in a detention. I was wondering if college might not take me because they see this detention that I have. I am really worried and never intended to get in trouble.

No definitely not! It was only a minor problem that will not go on your transcript. Please please please do not worry about this. However, make peace and leave off on a good note with all your teachers.

No. I’ve researched this for students who have been in trouble for more than this. You have nothing to worry about. They will not even know, nor will they care about detention.

I have a related question. At a debate tournament I took a book and wrote something really awful in it, just got iss for a day. I should note I was really angry and frustrated that entire day. Will this go on my records or kill my college career? I’m looking at UPenn, Reed, Swarthmore and Princeton.

@AnrachnoMe–High schools typically treat In School Suspension like the less serious “Detention” and don’t report it to colleges. But check with your counselor to make sure. In any case, a one-time episode like this won’t haunt you, and it’s unlikely that you’ll even have to mention it.
