New York SUNY schools do place an emphasis on the Regents exams, as they are specifically for NY students (OOS schools often do not pay any or as much attention to a Regents Diploma, Regents Advanced/Distinction, etc. as they are not familiar with the concept). 87 is NOT a competitive GPA for Bing, especially if you are failing Regents (which they do consider), and do not have stellar EC’s or references. Look for some other safeties, as well as considering transfer status after you have taken college level coursework with a grade of A/A-. Or become a basketball star recruit.

Definitely speak with your GC. According to the Binghamton Common Data Statistics info, 49% accepted were in the top 10% of their class. Your application will be reviewed for admittance based on your transcript through your Junior year. The fact that you didn’t take any AP’s during that time frame will hurt you.

Admissions will review your senior year rigor and grades only to fortify their decision of acceptance. If they see a drop in rigor or gpa, they can change an acceptance to a rejection.

I’m not trying to scare you about the process. I think it’s best for students to understand the realities of the application process. It is competitive. Nothing is guaranteed. Talk with your GC. Don’t wait until Jan. to apply—IMO, that’s too late.

Use the SUNY online app and apply to a few of them. You will definitely go to college–![]()
Be careful when making up your college list of reaches, matches, and safeties. Don’t base your choices strictly on your SAT score. You also need the GPA and rigor to match up with the class profile for incoming college freshmen.

If you went to Brooklyn Tech you would definitely get in…but don’t go crazy over Binghamton, it’s not the school it was years ago. The State budget problems have ruined it.

Ah, Bronx Science. Yeah, with that school administration’s “bureaucracy” and size, I don’t see any “guarantees.” It’s tough to stand out there and not everyone excels at that school. Fortunately, SUNY schools aren’t as selective as the ivies and they’re not looking for “renaissance individuals” who create clubs, win research competitions and create their own charity programs, etc (which I hear would be hard to do at your school)

On that note, a 2200 by itself should “open the door” to Bing. Participating in clubs (if you can get a club leadership position) and having a decent GPA (mid90s or higher, if possible) would push you in.

So they deny someone whose parents have been funding them (with taxpayer money) and might just be looking for a cheap good education just because they want to increase yield?

Acceptance is NEVER guaranteed. If someone tells you, “OH YOU’RE SURE TO GET IN!” then expecting to get in is setting yourself up for disappointment. To tell you the truth, i don’t even see the value of this question. Just apply and hope.

SUNY Bing pretty much cares mostly about your academics. A 2200+ SAT / 3.7+ GPA with several APs / a decent essay will leave you with a 80-90%+ chance. (ALMOST guaranteed)

In your case, I think you have a very solid chance. (but i would not consider it as a safety) A 2200+ SAT will push you mostly in, but will NOT do all the work for you especially seeing as public schools are getting more competitive. Seeing your GPA is “sub-par” you should focus on your essays / other aspects such as recs / ECs so you can have the final push to get in.

without even reading any of the thread beyond the title

…not if you can’t spell “guarantee.”

^ also it is “guarantee my acceptance” not “me acceptance”

Bing gets plenty of over qualified applicants every year. Chances are, with a 2200 on your SAT, you should be fine. I know a few people who were waitlisted with similar scores but they were eventually accepted. Even with a sub par GPA, a decent SAT will do you wonders.

I would simply put Binghampton at a match for you instead of a safety.

I know someone who had the opposite problem: great GPA and ECs, but middling SATs. She was deferred, then offered spring admission.

ok since u failed two regents it might be a different story.

sports = good
GPA = mid-range/acceptable
Fail regents = works against u
2200 + = major hook

my sis got in with like an 1800 sat and she was only in like cheerleading and she took APUSH with C+ (2 ap score) and she took like 2 SAT IIs both below 650 or 600 so thats where my opinion comes from

Her avg was C+ and got in? Wow what school did she go to?

And also, can/should I wait and retake the regents this year (senior in mid january) and applications early February?

No I don’t think her average was a C+, just that she had a C+. That being said, even though I don’t know the conversions of an 87, kids with weaker scores and stuff got in OOS from my high school. I would personally put money on you getting in. But just for getting more assurance I would ask your gc to see if he thinks you’ll get in, and if you have naviance it may be easy to see what kind of grades you need for admission. But really with a 2200 and in state you should walk in pretty easily.

well not if you can’t spell guarantee :(

^ ahaha, read my post on the previous page, stephen!

Great minds think alike :D

Bronx Science uses Naviance as a tool for college planning. You can login and compare your numbers (SAT and GPA) with other Bronx Science applicants. That will give you a better senses of chance.

Good luck!
