Hey, I'm only a junior in High School and I'm starting to look at colleges.

UW - 88.3 (Will go up during Senior year) I think thats like a 3.3 on a 4.0 scale
W - 92.7

I'm mid 80's-90's in every class except for Science.
In 10th grade(chem) and currently(physics), my cumulative averages are in the high 70's. I'm terrible at Science

SAT's - 2020 (might get higher after retake)
ACt's - Haven't taken.

Classes - 11th - AP U.S., AP Language, Honors Physics, Math 12S, R French
12th - AP Eco, AP Literature, AP Psych, R French, College Calculus

Clubs

Speech Team (Oral Interpretation)
Debate Team (Secretary)
Jazz band
Select Wind Ensemble
Pit Orchestra
Student Congress + Public Forums Debate
Varsity Lax

Constantly tutor adults computer basics at library for Volunteer work.

My essays should me fine, My siblings at Duke and Emory will assist me with that.

Chances? 1-10 scale? Safety, Fit, Reach, or out of reach?

Statistics for this years admitted class (09-10) have not been released yet but based on what I’ve been told by admissions counselors, the avg SAT score was a 1300-1350 or so. If you are looking at this years freshmen class, the avg high school gpa was a 93 and the sat was a 1275. Binghamton admissions counselors look at everything that you send so if you don’t have the greatest SAT score but you have great everything else you probably have a decent chance. Unfortunately, since I am a student who works in admissions and have no authority on this matter I can not tell you definitely. It really depends on how many applications (they recieved almost 30,000 apps this year) and what other people’s grades are.

Also, since it looks as if you play an instrument you can always consider applying for the special talents program. It is basically a way of helping your chances out by either submitting a portfolio of artwork, auditioning for an instrument, etc. Please visit admissions.binghamton.edu for more information.

Decision- rejected as transfer
GPA- 3.5 cumulative, 4.00 major (at tier 1 school)
SATs- good (high 600’s each section), but did not submit (maybe I should have?)
ECs- A lot, did not use the commonapp though so I could not list them
Essay- sent it in separate, I thought it was pretty decent
Other- I’m a NY State resident
Why I think I was rejected- maybe my gpa? I was also missing prereqs for the major so that must have contributed to the decision…

I suggest you use the commonapp as opposed to the suny application, so that you can list activities and work experience :)

Decision- rejected as transfer to SOM
GPA- 3.5 1 semester (currently at Cornell, for what its worth_
SATs- 1430/2060
I guess a 3.5 gpa doesn’t cut it. If i knew transfer admissions to Bing would be so competitive, I would have actually applied somewhere else. (HUGE MISTAKE) I may have to give it a shot in the spring, but frankly, I don’t see my gpa improving. At least I won’t be so naive to my lackluster chances, and will apply to other places less competitve.

94.5 GPA (Unweighted with 3 APs and all honors courses)
Top 10% of class
1220/1600 SAT
President of NHS, Spanish National Honor society, Band, Varsity Basketball for three years, environmentalist etc.
Volunteered consistently at two community organizations
Recognized by the United States Armed forces as an “individual with character, scholarship and serving as a true role model”.
Essay was good.
Recs were outstanding.

I was wait listed this past year. So when Bing Ambassador says “they look at everything”, don’t believe it for one second. All SUNYs care about are SAT’s and GPA.

UNLESS!-You are an out of state applicant. Then you will be accepted no matter what, and with significantly lower stats than tax paying New Yorkers.

I respectfully declined my position on the wait list.

The admissions counselors do look at everything. The essay is really what can make or break you from what i’ve heard from other people. Also, with 30,000 applications it is just really competitive. You do need high grades and SAT scores to beat out other people but it isn’t just those two things. They look at how involved you were in high school as well as the letter of recommendation and the essay.

On top of all this, they also look at the school you are coming from (it will be more competitive from a school in which 100 people apply than a school in which 5 people apply).

To reiterate what BingAmbassador has been saying, Binghamtons admissions counselors do consider all of your application material. If it were true that Binghamton exclusively based admission decisions on a students SAT scores and high school GPA, I wouldnt have been admitted (I dropped out of high school my senior year). Granted, I did have a 4.0 at a junior college when they accepted me; however, I truly believe that I was accepted based on my life experience and essays.

Accepted SOM
GPA 3.8
SAT 1400/2130
Lots of leadership/10 APs/no sports/no legacy

As for your GPA going up—are you sure that will be factored into your overall GPA? My GAP was based on 6 semesters, so regardless of how I did senior year it would stay the same. (Not to say senior year isn’t important, colleges will see those grades—I’m just unaware of how other schools compute overall GPAs that colleges will use.)

A friend who had a 3.3 GPA and 32 ACT was waitlisted. Lots of EC’s, some leadership, 5 APs, no sports, no legacy as well.

It’s not Bing—it’s my school. Our GPAs are based on 6 semesters of courses. Our senior year transcript is still obviously sent to colleges, but as for an actual numerical GPA, only freshman, sophomore, and junior years are used. Senior year grades are given but not factored into GPA.
