I found out I got a 3 on my ap chemistry exam. I am a rising junior and looking to major in biochemistry. Schools that I am planning to apply to include University of Michigan, NYU, and John Hopkins. Would a 3 on the exam have a negative impact when applying to selective schools since it is relevent to the major? Thanks and if it matters all my other scores are 4s and 5s. Would they just disregard it as an outlier.
No.
A/ AP scores carry little or no weight in the admissions process.
B/ Most colleges do not admit by major.
Don’t worry about it too much, especially considering it was just that one with other 4s and 5s.
If you have As in the class and a high subject test score (750 - 800), the 3 will be overlooked. If you have Cs or Bs in the class and a more moderate subject test score (in the 600s), the 3 serves as further indication of your actual achievement in / knowledge of chemistry.
However, an A in the AP course, but only a 3 on the AP test, calls into question the high school’s AP course quality and rigor. Not as much as the case where you got a 1 or 2 score, but it is not as good as getting a 4 or 5 score.
