Just to give you a background, I was lucky enough to be raised in a upper-class environment where money was never an issue. But, I still value its worth and desire a scholarship to college based on my academic achievements. I am a junior and I earned a 31 on my ACT and currently have a 3.88 GPA unweighted and a 4.2 GPA weighted. If I desire to go to University of Miami (FL), do you think I could earn a scholarship to go there? If not, what would I need to achieve this?

If this matters, I am very active with tennis and basketball, have over 700 volunteer hours, and play piano. I am also a part of many clubs such as environmental club, student council, and a few church organizations. Not sure how much the non-academic stuff factors into a scholarship.

It’s unlikely you would get a significant scholarship. The middle 50% ACT scores at Miami are 28-32, so you are a little above average there. Significant merit scholarships generally go to applicants in the upper 25% or higher.

Cheergirlie, which scholarship did you get that was for $60,000? Was it strictly merit based? It doesn’t look like the OP will qualify for financial aid. On the UMiami website I only saw two scholarships for incoming freshmen that would cover full COA. One (Stamps) required a 34 ACT and the other (Jenkins) required significant financial need and was only available to students from certain states. Are there more?

UMiami does give out a lot of merit awards More than half of these who end up going there get some merit money. Average merit money for the 25% who get these award with no financial is over $20K.

But, I can tell you that my experience with merit awards, is that unless you are in the very top echelon of those accepted, the awards tend to be small. My one son who did get a lot of merit money, didn’t get more than $5K a year. Every bit counts, but the COA for the school was way up there.
