So I'll go right to the point. I'm an INTERNATIONAL student who scored 2050: CR 640, M 780, W 630.

I checked my performance on the CB website and saw that I did 3 mistakes in the W section but got only 6/12 on the essay. How bad is it? Will they will be able to see how much mistakes I did and look at my essay? How much they will care?

I don't ask for you to chance me but just want to know how they may interpret that?

Wait, seriously? I’m pretty sure I got -1 MC and either a 6/12 or a 7/12 on the essay, and that translated into a 760. Do you have time to take it again? Do you have a TOEFL score? Either of those would help. (I don’t know whether they can see the breakdown.)

I don’t have time since I applied EA… I could withdraw my app and apply RA in Dec after retaking it. But I think that I have a better shot at applying EA.

I’m taking the TOEFL in a month… getting the score at the end of November. Not sure how that will help

You’re a current student, right? With a 6/12 or 7/12? I feel better…

Yup I had no idea about how to write timed essays. I just babbled about Edgar Allen Poe for the whole time. I’m not sure there was a thesis. (I did take the SAT before I took my first AP exam, so I didn’t have any practice, really. But a 25 minute essay would still be hard!) Anyway, I’m not an expert on international admissions. Hopefully somebody who is will see your thread. (Is there an international forum?) Regardless, I’m sure it won’t be the One and Only Reason you don’t get in/get deferred, if that happens. Obviously that’s not a great SAT, but it’s not so bad as to disqualify you.

Asking the question you did will not disqualify you from Harvard; chances are, the admissions officers never go on CC. My point is that the 6/12 would not be the sole reason that would keep you out of Harvard.

As a student for whom English is obviously not the native tongue, I suspect that 6 out of 12 is not bad. You have several grammatical mistakes in your post and that’s probably what dinged you in the essay as well. Neither of my kids got great essay scores, but I don’t believe Harvard was looking at the writing score at all the year my oldest got in. My youngest didn’t get into Harvard, but I suspect that had more to do with his grades than his scores. What I’d suggest you do, is go ahead and apply EA, but if you think you could improve the essay score you could take the SAT again and send it in if you get deferred to the regular round.
