Will bad grades in a high school course in middle school affect overall gpa in high school?

So, I was qualified to take Spanish I in eighth grade and I decided to accept the offer. I did well for the first marking period, but I ended up having to miss a bunch of days of school which led to uncompleted homework and a poor grade. Coupled with the fact that I was losing interest in the course, my grade dropped significantly. I tried to get out of it, but by then I had already missed the cutoff date. This class was supposed to give me high school credit, and if I had failed the finals at the end of the year, I would receive no credit. As luck would have it, I passed the final with B+. So basically, my question is
Will the bad grades I had received throughout the year in Spanish I, affect my overall high school gpa?

That depends on your school. My school didn’t calculate high school classes taken in middle school in our GPA. You should ask your counselor

My school did count them. This is something that is school specific. You need to ask them.

Mine did not count them. I agree with @guineagirl96 - ask your GC, since it will depend on the school. Regardless, looking at it from the long view, one B+ over 4 years will not have a meaningful effect on the overall GPA.

Thanks for the answers. I’ll email my GC on Monday.

At my high school, the classes you take in middle school don’t matter. The only middle school class that matters is math because if you take Algebra I in 8th grade, you can go straight to Geometry in 9th. Anyway, I wouldn’t worry about this too much. It’s great that you’re going to email your guidance counselor though because all schools are different. A B+ is not a bad grade at all! Passing with a B+ in a high school level class while you’re in middle school is pretty awesome. Luckily high school is a new start, so you’ll have a new opportunity to do as well as possible. Good luck!

In my high school, classes only taken during the school day at the high school are counted towards GPA (no middle school classes or CC classes) so I would check with Guidance… they are very helpful

It matters for course selection for your freshman year schedules and also for placement in Honors Algebra 2 (an average grade of A or B is needed) but other than that it really doesn’t matter. This depends on your school though.

(Woo! 300th post! I’m a member now! :D…At least I think that’s how it works…)

Well, it’s on my transcript for high school and I believe in my total GPA, im sure most colleges would re-calculate it without the middle school grade.

Even if your school calculates them into your GPA, it shouldn’t affect you that much through high school. While it might mess with your freshmen and maybe sophomore years, your later years should balance it out. One or two bad grades won’t mess you up, especially if they’re from middle school. Good luck in high school!

I also wouldn’t consider a B+ too bad of a grade. Even if it’s below what you’re used to, it’s easy to balance out with a few A’s. (:
