I dropped two Math courses, College Algebra II & Trig, in the summer and then retook it Fall '15 and passed with B’s.
Now I am in Calculus & Analytical Geometry and I want to drop it and not retake it. Will it affect my chances for graduate school?
Thanks!
Ultimately this is going to depend on each individual graduate school. It is also might depend on what you’re going into. For example, if you want to go to grad school for English, then dropping math classes isn’t such a big deal. If you’re a science major, then dropping math classes probably isn’t a great idea. I would also urge you to think about what your would want to pursue for your graduate education and look at requirements for top schools in that field. They may require or highly recommend calculus for admittance depending on your area of interest.
If this is your first or second year and you are at the beginning of a required Calculus sequence, then it is likely that it will not matter too much. If that is the case, then I advise you not to worry too much about graduate school now but why you are not able to get through your mathematics classes the first time.
The calculus is the beginning of the Calculus sequence but, the Calculus is not required for my major. I was just going to take it to keep my options open.
Having one or two W’s on your transcript is not a big deal. However, if you retake a course, nothing less than an A should be considered acceptable. They can frown at you for only getting a B for your second attempt. In my opinion, passing the class with a C on the first attempt is better than getting only a B on the second attempt. You should do your best to stay in the calculus class and get at least a B.
Thanks for the tips everyone but, I decided that I am going to drop the Calculus. If they frown at it, they frown. Life goes on. Taking the calculus has really taken a toll on my mental health and that’s more important. Thanks though!
