My first quarter ends November 10th. Will my ED school (WashU St. Louis) be able to see these grades when they decide whether or not to admit me in the ED round? Or will they only receive the grades after I have been admitted (if I am)? Wondering because the marking period does not technically end until after ED applications are due (November 1). Thanks
Varies by college, but in general, no, although if you are deferred, they will/may ask for a mid-year report.
That said, and I can’t speak for WashU specifically, but it has been known for an AO to contact the GC to request an update even if the quarter has not yet closed.
I know my S has applied ED to a university and they want his first qtr grades or an academic progress assessment from his HS. So, I think it may vary by school. Check your application status page of the ED University and the checklist states what they require. If it’s not listed you are good but may have to provide down the road if you are deferred or accepted as stated by the above poster @Throwaway1900
My kid’s HS automatically sends first quarter grades to ED/EA colleges. I have also read (on cc) about colleges that call GCs and ask for 1Q grades if they are not on file (presumably for candidates that are being seriously considered).
There was an “Ask the Dean” on this topic: http://www.collegeconfidential.com/dean/quarter-grades-care/
"However, when a student applies “Early Action” or “Early Decision,” admission officials will commonly contact the high school to ask for quarter grades because the early verdict must be determined before the more important semester grades or final grades are available. So quarter grades in the fall can matter a lot to students [who] are aiming for Early Action or Early Decision acceptance.
Bottom line: The majority of high schools provide grades before a semester ends, which colleges may request, especially for Early Action, Early Decision and perhaps Rolling Admission candidates. Many high schools also provide “Progress Reports” with projected grades that are sent out in-between official report cards. But if your school offers none of this, and you want to show colleges that you’ve gotten off to a super start in your senior year, ask your guidance counselor about gathering updates from your teachers and sending them to colleges even if there are no official grades to include."
Typically ED schools want to see first quarter grades.
@skieurope will a student know when an AO contact the GC?
Only if the GC tells the student.
