Will I Get In? Ahhh!

Hi all,

So I'm applying to a LOT of schools at the moment. I'll make a list below, please let me know what you think!

Right now I have a 3.44 GPA (Unweighted), a 3.6 GPA (Weighted). Regarding the weighted, I can predict that it'll go up to around a 3.7 / 3.8, MAYBE 3.9 at the end of this year (I'm taking college courses, they'll all total to about 23 credits at the end of the year). I took the SAT a couple of times, and my highest composite score is 1800 - (CR 660, Math 480, Writing 660). My main essay for most is about my struggles with a unique genetic health condition, and how I've maintained my grades and lived a full & adventurous life despite my physical limitations. My extracurriculars consisted of sports during my first two years of HS, and research/fundraising/organizing events for different nonprofit organizations as well as a doctor (geriatrician). Also, lots of student government activity. I think that about sums it up for the most part! What do you guys think my chances are for getting into these schools?

I'm also worried that I don't have enough safety / "likely to get into" colleges. I'm aware that I have a looot of reaches (and insane reaches)!

UC Schools: (already applied to all)
Los Angeles
Davis
Merced
Riverside
Santa Barbara
Santa Cruz

CSU Schools: (already applied to all)
CSU Long Beach
Sonoma State University
CSU Channel Islands
CSU Sacramento
San Diego State University
San Francisco State University
San José State University

CSU San Marcos
CSU Chico
CSU Fullerton

MOSTLY COMMON APP-

California:
University of Southern California
University of San Francisco
University of Redlands
Stanford University
Occidental College
Loyola Marymount University
Claremont McKenna College
Chapman University

Oregon:
Oregon State University
University of Oregon
Willamette University

Already accepted to Portland State University

Washington:

Washington State University

ETC:
University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
Salve Regina University
Lawrence University
Dartmouth College
Brown University
Boston University
Boston College

I'm hoping to send out all of these, however I know that I may have to trim several out due to time constraints. Again, I would love to hear back from you guys!

and I just got accepted to CSU Channel Islands! Yay!

Is that like 40 colleges you applied to?

Lol so no worries on your safety then. If you haven’t yet submitted applications to all the school, I’d advise you on narrowing your list to the ones you really want to attend, including another safety you love, unless CSU Channel Island was one of them.

Well, you must know that you’ll get in to a lot of those CSUs. Some of the private schools I don’t know anything about, but here’s my honest opinion: if you haven’t yet sent in your apps to the following colleges, I wouldn’t waste your time on them: USC, Stanford, Claremont McKenna, Reed, Dartmouth, Brown, BU, and BC. I mean, go ahead and apply if the application fees are no object and you have plenty of time to write all the supplemental essays, but if you’re at all crunched for time, those are the ones I’d skip. They are way long shots.

You have plenty of safeties, including a range of different kinds of schools, so you should have a good selection to choose from in April.

If CSUCI and Portland State are affordable, wouldn’t they be safeties since you have already been admitted to them?

@dustypig‌ Yeah, those are crazy high reaches, most not all my own influence. However out of all of them, I do want to apply to Reed! Thanks!

Man, you spent a lot of time and money on applications this fall! Good luck keeping track all those portal logins!

My crystal ball says the only UC you’ll make is Merced. UCR might happen as well but, i’m guessing no. The others are really unlikely.

CSUs - You are borderline for SDSU. That one could go either way, the other CSUs shouldn’t be a problem.

CA Privates - You’ve got a good shot at USF and LMU

I don’t know many of the non-CA schools you list but, others you’ll probably make -
UofO
Oregon State
WA State

Good luck narrowing it down and selecting the right school for you.

D is applying to 21 schools. We know that’s insane but you’ve got us beat. I don’t think these schools are very far off your qualifications so in that regard the list is fine. One thing to consider is this - let’s say you get into 3/4 of these by late March of next year. How are you ever going to be able to make a decision? If the essay requirements are minimal and you have the money for application fees, know yourself out. Usually when a student applies to a ton of schools they are going after enough reaches to maybe get lucky and enough safety schools to bag some merit aid. Not sure why your list is so long. Oh, if you are coming into senior year with a 3.44 unweighted (which is the one that matters for most selective schools) you won’t be able to move the needle that much by the end of your first semester. Year end senior year grades will only matter if they nosedive 2nd semester. If you do the math and you have 6 semesters completed and you do better or worse in the 7th semester you can show a nice trend but it won’t change the overall GPA one way or the other as much as you might think.

anyone who takes the liberity to apply to this many school will get into at least one

In fairness to the OP, the CSU and UC apps are just one app each, so really this is only 28 applications – or fewer depending on how many of the private schools are Common App with no supplemental essay.

There’s no reason NOT to apply to as many schools as you want to, so you might as well go for it. Good luck!

@Wje9164be‌, thanks for the input! I mean weighted GPA going up to 3.7 / 3.8, I’m taking more classes at the college this semester as well
