Will I get into UMass?

So I recently applied to UMass Amherst and now I'm waiting anxiously for a response. To perhaps soothe (or increase) my fears of not getting in I decided to get some other peoples' opinions on it.

Anyways, I'm a freshman at a community college in Illinois. I'm an 18 year-old Caucasian female with the intent of majoring in Chemical Engineering.

High school GPA- 3.48
College GPA- 4.0
ACT Composite score- 28
Took one Honors course and two AP in high school. In the Honors program at my college right now. Participated in the Gay-Straight Alliance at my college and Science Club (president senior year), choir (three years), Gay-Straight Alliance (secretary sophomore year), Romance Language Club, and Anime Club in high school.
I also have a couple excellent recommendations from teachers.

I feel like what I have isn't enough, but people have told me my stats are pretty good. So I was just wondering if anybody has an opinion on whether or not I'll get in. Also if there are any alumni or any current students who would be willing to tell me more about their experiences at UMass I would be incredibly grateful. :)

Thanks a lot!

I think you have good chances. I’d say at least 75%.

My S was admitted as a freshman this fall to the engineering program with a similar GPA (maybe a little lower) and what would be higher test scores (he took SATs , not ACT)

I think your college GPA and recommendations gives you a good chance-

Good luck!

hahaha I came into this thread expecting the Topic Poster to have like a 2.0 GPA, but with those stats sorry, I honestly kind of laughed at the fact that you were unsure if you would get in. I don’t intend to say that in a mean way at all, I’m just saying that I honestly think that with those stats you’re pretty much already in.

Maybe the Engineering Program has higher standards for acceptance and maybe an Out-of-State student has a harder chance of getting in, but most of the people from my school in Massachusetts are able to get in with low 3-point-something GPAs. With a 4.0 GPA, I think you’re probably eligible for Honors College or a scholarship maybe. Worst case I think would be that Umass accepts you as an Undeclared major and then allows you to transfer after a year.

Though the timing of this thread does make me wonder seeing as how they usually notify people by April at the latest… Did you get waitlisted or something? (EDIT: Oh wait nevermind, transfer deadline is different…)

The engineering school is more selective; also, as a transfer, I don’t know if she could be undeclared past the freshman year.

Dude, you’re in. I’m a senior right now, I have a 3.54 with nothing that displays leadership qualities in the extracurricular department. I work at least 40 hours a week at my parents’ pizza store and put in 141.5 hours of volunteer work at a center for the mentally ■■■■■■■■.

So, you seem to have a great deal more than me, with college experience, and a 4.0 to boot. I applied under early action and got in. You are GOLD!

Hope this helps,
George

" Also if there are any alumni or any current students who would be willing to tell me more about their experiences at UMass I would be incredibly grateful."

What do you want to know? I’m not a chemical engineer, but I know a couple. I also went into UMass as a chem major (I’m now a physics major) so I know a little about the chem classes.

lavieboheme, well how are the Chemistry classes for example? And any of the science courses for that matter? Thanks a lot. :)

And thanks to everyone else for helping to ease my fear. I haven’t gotten a response yet because my high school failed to send my transcripts when I requested them three months ago and I only recently found this out and had to resend them. So hopefully I get a response soon. :)

The chem classes are pretty good. They’re in the shiny new Integrated Science Building which is one of the nicest buildings on campus. I took the honors versions of both of them; if you get into ComCol the advantage of doing this is that you have lab every week (if you take the regular versions lab is only every other week).

Neither of the chem classes I took were too hard or too easy.

I am in my first semester of sophomore year at UMass Dartmouth and a crime and justice major and am looking to transfer to UMass Amherst for this spring. I did terrible in high school with a 2.6 but here at umd I have a 3.46, made dean’s list twice, and am doing a little bit better this semester as well which might boost it up a little. I forget what I got on my SAT’s but it was nothing special and just about average. I am applying to be a sociology major and back in high school was in a few different clubs and played 4 different varsity sports throughout my time there. I am in-state and heard that it is easier to get in since I am already in the UMass system (umass dartmouth) so I was just wondering if anyone else has been in my shoes before or thinks I will get in. Thanks!
