Essay and Supplement

Essay was about a chance meeting with a gay person during my outreach trip to China. And in spite of our apparent differences in background and culture, I came to the realization that we actually share the same vision for a more inclusive world that respects and understands the common need for love regardless of gender.

Schools:
Duke/Dartmouth/Stanford/Berkeley/Amherst/Swarthmore/UChicago

Do you have any safety school?

I think you will get into one or two of those schools but you never know.

Better chance at Swarthmore and Amherst since you are an Asian who wants to study language AND Full PAY.

problem is, zero safety schools. yup.

so I’m seriously worried.

i’ll be thankful to get into any of those seriously.

thanks for the chance btw!! :)

looking good for berkeley, amherst and swathmore. you have very good EC’s but maybe try and raise your SAT score a little? duke, darthmouth, stanford and uchicago are in no means out of reach, but they are quite unpredictable with the people they admit. good luck, chance me back http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1086809-what-chances-do-i-have.html</a></p>

I think you’re in at Amherst, Swathmore, and UChicago. And the others are all within your reach; however, you never know with the Admissions departments…

Chance me back? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1089274-what-my-chances.html</a></p>

no - you will not.

Thanks for the chances guys! Chanced back!

Keep em coming! :)

It looks like a great resume! Your best chances lie with UC Berkeley, Swarthmore, Amherest, and UChicago; however, I would not deny that getting into the others is a real possibility. I hate to say this but 2270 is pretty low for Stanford (at least I have the impression it is), but getting into Stanford is really hard anyway.
Chance me back:
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1087095-chances.html</a></p>

Most probably in at Berkeley, Swarthmore and Chicago. :)

I mean, you’ll get into at least one of these.

Everything is a possibillity. Just make sure you have some safety schools lines up just in case of anything. Berkeley and Swat are your best bets.

Chance me?? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1085617-final-chance-thread-because-i-know-gets-annoying.html</a></p>

I didn’t apply to any safeties lol :frowning: Chance you back in a sec!

bump

bumpitybump!

bumppppp:)

A 2270 is low for stanford???

Just have to say this: A 2270 is NOT low for Stanford. My goodness, I feel that some people on CC way overemphasize and overestimate the needed scores for the SAT.

1) Stanford’s SAT score range from the 25-75 percentile is 2040 to 2330. You are not only in that range, but on the high end of that range. You do not need a perfect 2400 to get into a top school, as some well intentioned people on CC seem to believe.

2) Even if your SAT score was low, you could still get in. Now, I don’t want to under-emphasize the SAT in college applications; it is an important part, and you surely won’t be seeing students with 1800 composites getting accepted into the top Ivies. However, it is still only a part of the application, and things such as the transcript are much more important. As per Harvard’s website: "Harvard does not have clearly defined, required minimum scores; however, the majority of students admitted to the College represent a range of scores from roughly 600 to 800 on each section of the SAT Reasoning Test as well as on the SAT Subject Tests. We regard test results as helpful indicators of academic ability and achievement when considered thoughtfully among many other factors. " The fact is, applications are not made simply on good SAT scores, and as long as SAT scores are in the ballpark range for a college, they aren’t a disqualifying factor, either (though higher SAT scores never hurt). Good applications are made with good EC’s, great grades, difficult course rigor, and excellent essays.

Now, with my rant out of the way, I need to stress that many of the schools you listed are reaches for everybody, and should be regarded as such. With that said, you have a better chance than most people. Your EC’s are great – though I don’t see much leadership, that is more than outweighed by the uniqueness of your profile. Looking at your application, I can clearly see passion in your EC’s, and you stand out. At the same time, you appear like an actual person; some people on CC seem like automatons whose only purpose in life has been to wrack up as many titles and awards as possible to get into a good college, but you seem to have a genuine interest in the things you do, and in the end top colleges are looking to admit people, not automatons.

Your testing scores are good (I know I said that previously, but just reiterating it again). Frankly, I think you stand a competitive chance at Duke/Stanford, you have a good shot at UChicago and Duke, and you’re in at Berkeley (I don’t know enough about admissions at the other two schools, but I’d imagine you have a good chance at them). Good luck!

Exactly. I know someone with a 2080 that got into stanford. His peers (7-8 of them) all got rejected with a SAT of 2300 +. The rejected people then came up with a brilliant idea to retake the SAT to try to get it above “2350”…The counselor couldn’t help but force a smile.

What was wrong with the 7-8 high scorers? They’re intelligent and can circle bubbles very well, but they’re not the only ones who are smart. You need something more. The guy with a 2080 had done some quite remarkable stuff to set him from the crowd. The 2300 scorers were frankly just not as impressive.

If I were you, I would emphasize your service. Police service is rare in applicants (pretty sure anyways) so finding any way to stress that would help you. Your sat is fine, and your ecs seem to be extensive and car more mature than most applicants.

I agree with others though, that you should look into some safety schools. While your chances of getting into at least one of those is very high, you obviously know that you are competing against a very strong and self selecting pool of international applicants.

Overall, you look impressive.

Good luck.

Your stats are great and you are a strong applicant at all the schools. That being said apply to at least one safety, you never know what will happen. I know a girl who got rejected at UChicago and Swarthmore but now goes to Brown despite being equally qualified for all three. Admissions is extremely subjective and no matter what you want to have a safety (and with your stats it should not be hard to find one). Good luck!
