I can never find an appropriate sub forum so the majority of my posts end up here because it seems to have the most forum traffic which leads to more answers.

A few days ago I decided to withdraw from an Anatomy and Physiology class that I began a week ago (it was a late start condensed class). I am engineering major at community college and I've already completed my electives but I wanted to take the course for a GPA boost and because I am seeking a certification in personal training; the course is relevant.

I quickly realized that this was not a high school A&P class. I was overwhelmed by the amount of material we had covered within the first two lectures (300+ terms, half of which I've never heard of). I believe I was the only student in the class not studying nursing or surgical technology. I decided to withdraw from the class because it was detracting from my focus in my core classes, and the tuition refund would have been quite helpful as I've been struggling financially lately.

The first day of class my professor explicitly stated that October 8th was the final day to withdraw from the class and receive a full refund and have no marks placed on the transcript. His syllabus also noted this same date.

Well I went in on the 8th (yesterday) to withdraw and was informed that October 7th was actually the last day to withdraw without penalty. I explained my situation and the folks helping me seemed very understanding but unfortunately it was not their decision to make.

I had to write an appeal to the registrar of the school who also happens to be the vice president. I sent the email appeal last night and never received a reply. I was a little concerned by this so I went back to the registration desk today and spoke to a few other people who told me that my odds of winning the appeal were favorable but it could take upwards of two weeks for the registrar to finalize a decision and process a refund.

Yesterday when I found out that I would have to submit an appeal I told them that I needed a quick decision because if I do not receive a refund then I want to remain in the class. Well the people I spoke to today explained to me that I wasn't allowed to stay in the class while awaiting a decision from the registrar.

I am extremely upset right now and my parents seem pretty irritated as well. They have made it clear to me that if I do not get a proper verdict that they are going to take this into their own hands.

Yes, I go to community college; tuition is not terribly expensive. But I paid for the semester entirely out of pocket (I do not qualify for financial aid because of my family's income), roughly 1200 for the course. I went to two lectures and decided to drop the course. I could just have easily dropped it on October 7th, but I waited until the 8th so I could talk it over with my parents. The professor gave me the wrong date. If I had researched the date further I'm sure I would have found the error earlier but they don't really advertise these types of things. I really don't plan on taking no for an answer here, I did nothing wrong. It's not as if I was holding a seat in the class that someone else could have had; there were two empty seats. Not realizing that I couldn't handle the workload doesn't warrant having 1200 dollars stolen from me. I already pay nearly double what every other student pays per credit because I live out of state.

The registration folks I worked with were sympathetic but only slightly. They said that the registrar will likely accept my appeal because he is very understanding and student-oriented but that did not comfort me much...
