Will my ACT scores become null and void without the writing section?

In September I took my ACTs and got a 27 Composite and an 8 on the writing. Last week I retook it but figured I wouldn't have to retake the writing if I was happy with the writing score. Now I am reading that schools like UW-Madison and University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana will only take scores from the same test date.

Will the score I receive on the test from last week go right in the trash if the schools I apply to require a score for the writing test? Am I not able to send in both scores?

UIUC is neither requiring nor using the writing section of the ACT for those applying for Fall 2013. Wisconsin requires the writing section but if you submit both one with and one without writing, it will use the one with writing to determine that you have complied with the admission requirements and to determine your composite but admission officials can consider individual section scores from the other ACT in their review to determine whether to admit the applicant. Other colleges may or may not consider the one w/o writing in that situation and you need to check with each college and often that means contacting the college because most don’t tell you on their site what they do with an ACT w/o writing when you submit one with writing.
