I scored a 212 on the PSAT in Michigan and therefore became a semifinalist. I recently took the SAT and got a 2070 (1390 CR + M)...will this be enough to be a finalist?

You can only qualify through the PSAT--not the SAT.

Info:

National Merit Scholarship Program: The National Merit Scholarship Program is the oldest and most recognized scholarship associated with the PSAT. Nearly all US high school students who take the PSAT are entered into the competition, which rewards the highest-scoring students with scholarships from NMSC, local corporations, or subscribing colleges. The top 3% to 4% of test takers are recognized as "Commended Students," and their names are submitted as such to two colleges of their choice. Of these approximately 50,000 Commended Students, 16,000 are selected as National Merit Semifinalists based on their PSAT score and their state of residence. NMSC designates a specified number of Semifinalists from each state in order to ensure that all states are represented, and then selects 15,000 of these students as National Merit Finalists. Each Finalist must submit an application, an official SAT score, and a letter of recommendation from the high school principal in order to compete for scholarships. More than 8,000 will win a merit scholarship based on their PSAT and SAT scores. To learn more, visit the NMSC website at www.nationalmerit.org.

You can compare your SAT percentiles here:

I think you didn't understand my question...I qualified already as a semifinalist through my PSAT. The NMSC requires you take the SAT to confirm your PSAT score. I scored about 40 or (4) points less than my PSAT and I was wondering if I can still become a finalist with this score?

I think your SAT score is fine; it just has to be comparable to your PSAT, and yours looks in the range.

Oh, I got it.

Well, 15,000 students are finalists.

1.5 million students take the test.

It looks like the top 1% become finalists.

Check your percentiles to see if you made 99th percentile.

Only about 1,000 NMSFs don't move on to Finalist. I have been told(tm) that most of these didn't submit their finalist application, didn't get referrals from their schools, or had really abysmal grades that didn't match their test scores. If you did the paperwork and don't have a 2.2 GPA, I'm guessing you are in. (Don't yell at me if I was wrong here -- I'm just a Dad.)

WashDad is right. thats what my counselor told me.

bump......

hahaha, spartyon sounds like a college board brochure

I think your SATs are fine. I was curious about that myself, so I called College Board a few months ago. I forgot exactly what the person told me (I'm a big help, I know), but I remember thinking at the time that the SAT score needed was pretty low in comparison to the high score needed on the PSAT. Anyway, if you want a better answer, just call College Board.

bump.......

bump.......

call collegeboard.......

Hey,

I need to know whether I will be a commended student or not. It says that last years cutoff was 203 and I have a 202. My test does say it is in the 97th percentile which seems like it is good enough.

Thanks ahead of time...

yeah i think that is enough...the scores seemed to have dropped this year

My son is a Semi-Finalist now and I was wondering if a 2150 would be sufficient for him to make Finalist; sounds like it should be. His grades and all the rest are very good. Quite a few colleges have offered him a full ride if he becomes a Finalist, which is truly amazing, when you consider how expensive school is these days! Thanks for the postings, folks.

Same question.

Hey everyone, I’m resurrecting this thread, but for a different reason.
My SAT will be comparable/even better than my PSAT and I was a semifinalist.
My question is, how low of a GPA can you have? I’m talking like a 3.5-3.6 unweighted, 4.3-4.4 weighted D:

Yeah, I know, it’s pretty bad. Will I be one of the 1000 semifinalists kicked off :'(

Only on collegeconfidential… I hope you’re joking
