Will My Sat Score Hold Me Back?

Hi, I am an upcoming senior and I’d like to know what are my chances of getting into UCSB, UCD, UCLA, UCSD, and UCSC.

SAT-1420 with a 14 on the essay
Weighted GPA- 4.1
Unweighted GPA- 3.93
AP’s Taken- 4 including the one I will take senior year

What I’m worried about is my low SAT essay score holding me back from getting into these schools.

For UCB and UCLA, that SAT needs to be around 1500.

whats ur major

Projected Middle-range SAT Scores for Attending Students (based on the new SAT format)

UCLA: 1280-1520
UCSD: 1270-1490
UCSB: 1210-1440
UCD: 1160-1430
UCSC: 1150-1390

Your score would be above average at all of these schools, should that be an indication for you.

Your SAT is competitive for all the schools on your list and your GPA is within range. Much can depend upon intended major but definitely worth applying. Consider UCLA a Reach but all are possible.

Freshman admit rates (2016) for UC GPA of 3.80-4.19:

UCB: 14%
UCLA: 14%
UCSD: 44%
UCSB: 54%
UCD: 58%
UCI: 65%
UCSC: 85%
UCR: 94%
UCM: 96%

Yeah but upon checking the freshman admissions, I realized my sat essay score is subpar. I’m wondering if that would greatly lower my chances of being admitted into the following colleges. Also, my intended major is biochemistry or computer science. Thank you for the replies!

You could possibly be seeing statistics for accepted students, which will be higher than those for attending students.

It’s for 25% through 75% of the students. I guess what I’m most curious about is how heavily the sat essay will affect admissions

SAT essay is nothing to get in a fuss about. Colleges recognize your writing ability is not determined by what you can write with a random prompt in 40 minutes after taking an exhausting test.

Were any of your APs Language or Literature? If so, then the essay is irrelevant.

Sadly, I didn’t have the opportunity to take AP Literature because my schedule would not allow for it.

Actually, I did just get my California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress report, and I received a score 2773 for ELA. I believe the report is also known as SBAC. Would that benefit me when applying to colleges?
