Hey, I’m an 18 year old guy from Sweden. As of now it is looking like I’ll be going to CU Boulder but I’m worried that people will start mocking me for my accent. Is that something I should be worried about or are people generally nice to people with foreign accents?
I think you will be fine. Best of luck to you!
People will most likely love you and your accent! How exciting! Boulder is a fun town. Enjoy yourself and learn lots!
Agree If anything your accent will be a plus!
If you’re serious, I wouldn’t worry. I expect many people will be curious and want to get to know you. Just be yourself, make an effort to say hello, and be sure to get involved in campus activities.
Relax. If anything, it will be a conversation starter with people wondering where you are from. And revel in the knowledge that you will likely never meet anyone who speaks Swedish better than you speak English.
Even within the U.S. there are many different accents. Folks from Boston have a different accent than those from Rhode Island or from South Carolina.
No one will mock you!
No one would mock you for a Swedish accent; in fact, you will find that people will be drawn to you. Don’t worry one bit about it.
There are people from all over the place at CU and in the larger city of Boulder. It’s not at all unusual to hear multiple different foreign accents on a trip to the supermarket or walking across campus.
Americans tend to be curious about accents, not mocking. In fact, it’s common that people think accents are “hot” as in attractive.
People in Boulder are generally friendly and open to diversity. It’s a beautiful and fun place to live, especially if you like outdoor activities—hiking, biking, climbing, skiing. I think you’ll love it!
My Jersey girl (right outside NYC) is in South Carolina, the accents couldn’t be more different.
European, yes, but not Asian.
No worries, your English might be better than many “natives’” .
Seriously, I was born, raised and schooled in Europe, yet at my office in the U.S., before long most written communication would end up on my desk by default.
You’ll be just fine!
