will SEAS survive till i graduate??

so..i was browsing articles in the daily pennsylvanian about SEAS..nd i read tht SEAS ws going to lose accredition last year and it ws to be shut down fr a year!! also, 5 departments were labelled "deficient" ..
Also, i read that rankings have fallen over the past few years..
i dont believe much in rankings, but i thot tht since everyone felt tht SEAS is underrated..US News would gt bak their senses nd Penn SEAS would rise in rankings..declining rankings cannot be good..is Penn SEAS becoming worse?
will these rankings (nd SEAS's quality) dip or improve?

BUMP... this is something I have a great concern about also

as i recall, the sole area of deficiency was "gathering feedback from students"...

really, nothing to be worried about. the abet people came back and everything is accredited just fine now.

penn bioengineering was just ranked #1 for faculty productivity among bioengineering / biomedical engineering schools.

the us news rankings are skewed to the fact that most penn seas graduates do not become professional engineers, and are also not representative of the strengths of each department (be is like #7, or something)

Can anyone provide a link to the online version (if it exists) ?

psh i wouldn't worry about that. at all.

to tell you the truth, i was a bit freaked out when i first read that a few months ago. however, take a second glance at that article, and Dean Glandt's response. to summarize: basically, the only thing "deficient" about those 5 departments is that they did not ask for enough student feedback. that's it. everythign else went swimmingly, and the ABET folks were actually impressed by the rest of the school. meanwhile, the problem was quickly and easily fixed. no more problems (hopefully).

ranks fluctuate all the time anyway. the difference between #25 and #30 (the ranks that SEAS has tended to oscillate between over the last two years) is negligible. you gotta understand that SEAS is a small school to begin with. yes, many faculty do some great research there, but they're not pouring all their resources into billion-dollar-particle-accelerator toys (they leave that to the boys at MIT/Caltech/Stanford etc). engineering ranking is basically the following: send out a survey to the deans of all the engineering schools in the country. ask them to rank penn on a 1-5 scale... most deans end up giving 5s to those institutions that perform the billion dollar experiments, and rate "poorly" the schools that may be providing an excellent education but aren't as "esteemed" in academia. in fact, i think you'd probably get a better education at penn, only because the focus is on undergrads, hands-on experiments, etc (rather than on grad students, securing grants, and sitting on the board of an engineering firm). basically, penn's fluctuation over the last few years has been on the scale of about 0.3 i think. considering that these are entirely subjective ratings, i would hardly consider that "Becoming worse." opening new buildings probably means things are actually getting better.

lastly, if you're STILL worried about accredidation, remember that ABET accredits programs on six-year cycles. so by the time the next set of inspections come up in 2012, you'll already be well into your first job with a nice ABET-accredited diploma.

so no worries dude.

thanks fr your responses..
i also read that a problem ABET had was tht 3/4th of the profs refused to speak in english!!
is tht rite??(i doubt its true..bt thn wer did thy gt tht wierd misconception frm??)

i doubt that's true.

however, i have heard that applied to the math department TAs before

rofl this isnt going to happen

So what's bad about a non-ABET accredited Diploma?

anuj--how about not attending penn at all? since you have so many doubts about the quality of education there.

Hahah, guys, relax.

Here's the article I believe you guys are referring to: http://media.www.dailypennsylvanian.com/media/storage/paper882/news/2006/04/04/News/Engineering.School.Loses.All.Accreditation-2144676.shtml

The article was published on April 4, 2006....for the April Fools Edition of the Daily Pennsylvanian!

Here's an article from September 06, once the ABET results were in: http://media.www.dailypennsylvanian.com/media/storage/paper882/news/2006/09/20/News/All-8.Engineering.Departments.Earn.Accreditation-2286753.shtml

All 8 engineering departments "passed with flying colors!"

Penn Engineering is on an upswing. The university seems to also be investing an increasingly larger amount of money on SEAS too with the new bioengineering building, soon to be built nanotech building, and new faculty hires. Look around the actual SEAS website, there's plenty of action going on at SEAS.

only if they stop letting in people like you

if they actually taught in hindi, i would have no problem understandings...
that article is funny!

"I already spend 23 hours a day in class. When am I going to have time to apply to other schools?" said Engineering junior Ben Weinberg, who was abroad last semester and was not aware of Penn's accreditation woes until this point.

How can anyone in not see that this article is not a joke.

@ jco

Agreed. Kinda want max on this board...

wait, was this thread seriously started over someone reading a joke article in the dp from over a year ago? dear god... i legitimately don't know what to do with that. i mean, the underclassmen seem to take themselves more seriously each year but... good lord...

well there were legit articles on the matter but the gag issue, as usual, overexaggerates the topic...

and it's not always easy (beats me why) for people to understand that the gag issue articles are jokes.

matt: what?

@ max:
different max. a max who has very strong opinions on the SEAS ABET issue. (as he is a SEAS faculty member)

Le Mintz

No doubt he is ashamed of me

april fools on april 4? that should have been april 1..
the 23 hours a day..i thought that was a misprint or something..

sristi..thanks for your unwanted advice..i assume you have no doubts in life..i was asking for the opinion of other people already there..not you

@all everyone else..i read a few not so positive articles about engineering at Penn..im not in the US..so could not visit nd dont no much about what actually happens there..twas just a concern nd people who answered seriously..thanks a lot..
