i already have contacts provided by my parent’s healthcare back home, and was wondering if the academy would renew my pre-existing medication.

Also, if you wear contacts, is it true that you still have to wear glasses during BCT but can go back to contacts afterwards?

Just double-checking. :D

I am not sure if they would pay for it. Yes, you wear BCGs during BCT

I'm 95% sure you can get contacts through the cadet clinic's optometry section.

Yes, you MUST wear BCGs rather than contacts in BCT. This is a health issue (and a very serious one at that). Especially in Jack's, there is too much dirt and grime for people to safely wear contacts. Contacts can cause serious eye injuries in such situations.

and you get to look beautiful in bcg's. a very elite group.

That's what I thought. Thanks for your help!

Even if you wear contacts, bring your OWN glasses to I-day! ....sometimes, for whatever reason, the BCG's aren't ready.....so for those few lucky cadets, they are allowed to wear their OWN glasses until their BCG's are delivered! My D wore her own for all of 1st BCT. Her BCG's weren't delivered until the morning she left for Jacks. Out there she actually liked the gorgeous spectacles because they were good for keeping dust, mud, etc..out of your eyes.

Still, bring your contacts/solution on I-day in your duffel bag. You will get it back right after BCT and then won't have to wait for someone to mail them! :)

usafa medical "does not" pay for contacts, only glasses and only one pair of frames per year. So get as many pairs as you can on your existing coverage. Also, your parents will probably want to keep you on their coverage for a while anyway. There is a whole section in the stuff USAFA sends you about why they will want to do that, so I won't go into here.

I like BCGs!!!

okay, well i found out that the academy will only pay for contacts if you're on an athletic team, and only throughout the season. they will administer a contact lense exam to update the prescription, but they won't actually pay for the contacts, only glasses.

Oh yeah, I forgot that the IC's get contacts. Not sure I understand the logic there, but there are a lot more important things that go on at USAFA that I will never understand. But yes, you are correct, IC's get contacts at no charge. And yes, they will do the exam to update the prescription. My son emailed me his and I went to sams club and picked up his contacts and mailed them to him.

if you don't mind me asking, what was the price range on those contacts? see, i lost four months worth and all i need is four months more until i am able to get a year's worth off my parent's coverage in june.

Well, they are cheap at Sam's Club, but it really depends on what brand and everything. See your prescription is for a certain brand, so you can just pick and choose. I think his cost like $14 for a box of 6 contacts at Sam's. There are other places online also, but I still like Sams or Costco the best. Even if they don't carry the brand in the store, they can usually order them and they are still less expensive than most of the online places like 1800contacts.com Feel free to PM with your prescription info and I will find the best deal for you if you need the help.

Sam's Club is awesome for contacts. We have found it's the absolute cheapest place to buy them. AND, the best part, you do NOT have to have a Sam's Club membership to use the optical dept.

I'm sorry, Undercover, that you lost your contacts. There is a Sam's right there in Colorado Springs. Hopefully you can get over there and get you some more. If your contact prescription is still current (it lasts one year) you can have your eye Dr. fax it to the local Sam's club and then they can sell you contacts.

Good luck this next semester. :)
