I'm applying to Stanford and some other privates that are less selective than Stanford but still quite selective (eg Pomona).

Before senior year my unweighted GPA was almost a 4.0, but 1st semester this year I got a C in AP Calculus AB, a B in AP Literature, an A in AP Spanish and A's in the rest of my classes, which weren't APs or Honors.

The B in AP Literature is fine but that C in AP Calculus AB looks pretty bad. Still won’t hurt you too much though (unless you’re doing some kind of math or math heavy major), I wouldn’t worry about it.

^ That bad? The C could really be a deal breaker for Stanford?
I didn’t think I would get in anyways, but ever since I applied I’ve had a little bit of hope for some reason. I would be really disappointed if these grades of all things are what decides my rejection… though I’ll have no way of knowing what factors play into it

When a school receives midyear reports has it already made a decision and the grades can either support that decision or reverse it, or does a school use the grades to help come to a decision?

Is it any help that I took an advanced math class (not ap or honors though) in freshman year and got a C in that, so from then on until senior year I took the “regular” math classes and got As in those? Would my Cs in the advanced math class and AP Calc show that I didn’t slack off, but that I struggle with higher levels of math?

None of my intended areas of study are very reliant on math.
