So basically, by the end of the summer session at my CC, I'll have 17 units and a 3.8 gpa (not marvelous, I know.) But in the fall, I'll be taking 19 units, in the winter I'll be taking 7, and in spring I'll be taking 17, which brings m to exactly 60 units for transfer. I'm 16 years old, and graduated a year early, and by finishing CC in one year, I'll be two years ahead by the time I transfer. But the thing is, applications for Fall 2010 are due November 30th- right in the middle of the fall semester, meaning that only my summer grades will be available to them. How do I explain this? Should I talk to a counselor about it or mention it in my essay? What do I do? HELP!

First of all, your GPA is great! You have nothing to worry about unless you’re a communications major. What’s your major?

Yes, you’ll only input your summer grades BUT the following January, you’ll be required to input your grades for the Fall semester AND THEY WILL be taken into consideration.

you should be fine because you will have the units you need by the end of your spring semester. when filling out the app. you will input all of your planned courses for the upcoming semesters which they will take into account. once january comes around you’ll input your grades for fall and winter if available and they will take those into consideration as well. in fact, i believe they don’t even look at your app. prior to January’s update, this is why we find out so much later than freshman.

there’s nothing modest about a 3.8 …
on this board, there’s become a tendency to trivialize any GPA under 4.0. bottom line, the elitist as$holes making those posts are sad, sad individuals who likely define themselves by school, and school alone. pay them no mind.

you sure you don’t want to spread your units out? maybe age a little more, before joining your ‘peers’?

^pinkerfloyd do i sense some aggravation towards some ppl on this board? ahha

but seriously, 3.8 is good, but you have to MAINTAIN that grade to ensure you get in. Your grades shouldn’t be an issue. I’ll give you my situation to help make you feel better. I just got out of high school (nearly flunked out…don’t ask), so i took one class at the CC over summer, when i applied i only had one class racked with a grade. I took 7(?its been awhile haha) classes, and proceeded to finish the transfer requirements into spring. My load in the spring was much easier because i already had 13 ap tests done and that saved me a lot of time. I got into ucla with a 4.0, but i think it slipped to a 3.89 or something rather. Well the moral of the story is don’t worry too much, maintain that grade and you’ll get in. OH, and finish your prereqs. THAT’S IT!!! good luck

^REVEL do i sense some aggravation towards some ppl on this board? ahha

Keep in mind, just because you covered the minimum unit requirement doesn’t mean you’ll be accepted. They want you to complete as many major prereqs as possible. If you’re able to overlap classes to cover both IGETC and major prereqs, then you’ll be cool. But if you’re missing 5 major prereqs they may reject you just based on that, even with your stellar gpa.

@Tiberius: Thanks! No, I’m definitely not a communications major! I’m a sociology major, mainly because I want to go on to law school, and find sociology interesting.

@sweetnezz: Wow, thanks. I definitely didn’t know that. That makes me feel a lot better! I thought they would see that I only have 5 classes so far (6 more will be in progress in the fall) and say “Nope! You can’t finish on time!”

@pinkerfloyd: Yeah, that’s actually where I got the impression that I need a 4.0 to get in, from reading this board. It really stresses me out, especially since it’s UCLA… And as for the peer thing, no not really. I mean, I won’t say the whole “Oh, I’m SO mature for my age” thing, but I do think that I can at least handle the independence and self-paced factor of it without crumbling (plus, I live right outside of LA, so I won’t be too far from home if I run into any problems).

@Revel: Yeah, I’ll definitely make sure to keep my GPA high! That’s really the most important thing right now, by far.

@Bmop: Oh, no, I’ll definitely have ALL my prereqs done by the end of spring! I planned my schedule out, with a few backups just in case certain classes aren’t offered in the winter or spring, to make sure that the IGETC and my major classes are all completed. I would join scholars so that I would be in TAP and have priority, but they only accept scholar applications in the fall at my CC, but I won’t have 30 units until the END of fall.

Another question: Will my lack of extracurriculars really hurt me? In high school, I was in independent study, so no ECs were offered, and I didn’t have the ambition to look for myself. So will that cripple me significantly even if I make up for it with a good GPA and all prereqs done?

^I’m not sure. They don’t give as much weight to ECs for transfers as they do for freshman, but some people claim they’re still necessary. If you have a job that will probably work. I think they’re primarily interested in your GPA and that you’ve finished all necessary classes.
For 2009 sociology transfers, the avg gpa was 3.72, so you’re on track so far.

The only EC’s i had were work and teaching TKD. I was pretty much boring aside from those two activities haha

Yes but by work you mean you ran your own business since you were a junior in high school. I mean that has got to count for a lot in the way of ECs. I’m truly surprised you didn’t try to apply to Haas instead.

let me make this clear, after i’m out i never want to do business again. It is not something you want to do if you have a conscience, ok there are good ppl out there, but business is cut throat and ppl don’t care about one another. It’s always about money, and sometimes they are willing to kill for it.

Maybe that counts a lot for ec’s, but i never really saw it that way because i know a lot of ppl who support themselves and their families as well. They have a lot more hardship then I do, I’m just lucky.

Bmop: When I said no ECs or work experience, I mean NOTHING lol. It’s actually a bit sad. In high school I did show choir for one year, and made varsity cheer, but went to independent study before I started cheer, so I couldn’t even put that on the app, right? And sadly, I don’t work or volunteer. =/

Revel: If you don’t mind me being nosy, what kind of business did/do you run?

Just put down whatever ECs you have, they’re not going to dock you for cheerleading. From what I’ve heard, from what are probably unreliable sources, ECs for transfer applicants only give them an edge if they’re in the ‘maybe’ category. What’s going to put you solidly in the ‘accepted’ category are your grades and prereq completion.
If you’re worried about it, go out and get a job.
