Will you turn down Cornell for merit?

Of course, everyone here WANTS to go to cornell. Take a look at the thread discussing financial aid vs. prestige...many, many people have excellent reasons to go with the money.

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=21907&highlight=full+ride

I would. I respect my hardworking family more than that to have them front the bill (and me too with work-study) plus have loans out my butt after college - and needing graduate school. Of course the college I got merit aid at already is Rutgers and they have a good undergrad research program in biochem so it's not like I'm losing too much.

Cornell does offer merit aids but funded by donors,
so these are not strictly "university merit aids".

The topmost admits every year are offered with various awards, such as
Cornell Leadership (stipend), Cornell Presidential Research Scholar (min $10k/year research stipend), Engineering College's Dean McMullen awards etc.

no....nooooo...NOOOOOO.

(If stanford/MIT then yes, otherwise refer to line above)

Thanks fbc001. Is a separate application necessary for these, or is everyone automatically considered?

Do you know if there is a listing of these? anywhere on line?

T990,

The umbrella organization for these programs is called the Cornell Commitment

Here's some more info:

http://www.commitment.cornell.edu/

No need to apply. They'll come and find you. :)

Wharf

PS - go to the Engineering website for the McMullen award

The cost doesn't matter. Even if it will take me a few years to pay off the debt, an ivy league education is worth more than anything one could get at another school. Period.

WharfRat is correct with reply (for Cornell Commitment) above.
You don't apply to any of the merit awards but are selected based on your credentials.
btw, these are all 4-year programs, renewable every year (based on GPAs etc.) so the total award can really add up.

It's really a great incentive to attract top students to Cornell.
Good luck to all!!

As much as I would want to go to a school outside of my state school (Rutgers), it will be tough to turn down getting 2 free tuitions and free room & board (= getting paid about 8000+ a year).
