William & Mary Fall 2011 Transfer Thread

Hey- just thought I would start a thread where all of us could post our stats, questions, suggestions, concerns, etc!

Question for W&M Admission- I took 4 APs in high school and got 3s on all of them. Is it worth sending in these scores? I'm applying as a sophomore transfer (if that makes any difference)

The only 3s that are awarded credit are Calculus BC and the foreign languages so if your 3s are in other disciplines, there’s no need to report them. You can double check what scores receive what credit on page 50 of the Course Catalog ([William & Mary - Course Catalogs & Course Schedules](Course Catalogs & Schedules | William & Mary)).

If there are other questions about transferring, just post them and we’ll reply

thank you very much for the link! that helped a lot.

W&M is definitely my top choice and I’ll pretty much go there if accepted- is there any way I can convey this to the admissions committee without sounding stupid and whiny? I’m sure you guys get lots of applications saying that W&M is the person’s top choice, but it actually is true for me. I wish there was ED for transfer admissions!

While the Common Application essay asks you to detail your reasons for transferring, the answer is generically somewhat generic if you’re submitting the Common App to multiple institutions. However, you can use the optional submission on the W&M Supplement to express your specific interest in and desire to attend W&M

i’m actually using the reopen application form because I applied last year. I guess I’ll just make sure to really express my interest in the school in my essay!

Yes. Since you only send the Reopen form to W&M, you can be as specific as you wish because it’s not going to any other schools. Plus, by applying again, we assume there’s a strong interest given you’ve applied in the past and despite a less-than-positive outcome, remain interested enough to apply again.

I can’t wait to apply to William and Mary :)

Glad to hear it sthomas92. Applications are due March 1.

does getting the application in sooner benefit the applicant in any way?

Sadly no. We do not practice rolling admission (students receive decisions as they are reviewed). So the student who submits their application today and the one who submits it at midnight on March 1 will hear on the exact same date. As an office that practices holistic review, we need to be able to view the entire applicant pool before making final decisions.

this may be a stupid question, but i seriously have no idea what to do. the midyear report that you want us to give our professors is just one sheet where the professors lists the grades. does that mean i just hand it to the prof and they hand it directly back and i can see the grade and comments? couldn’t someone change the grades?

McBainTrain, yes, you just give the mid-year report to your professors who write down your grade to date and sign it. Could someone change the grade? Theoretically yes. But every applicants signs the W&M honor code and we’re going to also receive a final transcript so if we were to find that someone forged the mid-year report that would be cause for us to rescind any offer of admission.

but if i waive my right to see the form, how do i pass the form to the different professors? have them put it in an envelope and just trust that i won’t look at it?

Last semester I took Intro to Politics, Survey of math, Intro to Psych, and a Core Seminar and got a 4.0. Is this course load rigorous enough? This semester I am taking Social Psychology, Intro to Anthropology, Intro to Judaism (200 level), and Literary Plays and Playwrights. Because of space limitations I was not able to get into the classes that I wanted/would count as W&M pre-reqs. How will this affect me in the admissions process? I’m applying for fall 2011 as a sophomore.

McBain Team, simply do not waive your right. We expect that applicants have seen their mid-year grade forms. We’ve never heard of any applicant having trouble with not wiaving the right and passing it from teacher to teacher.

surfwakesnow165, many of your classes appear to be transferrable (Psych, Anthro, Judaism and possibly your lit class). However, your math class will not transfer and you do not have any science classes. We do look for both science and a transferable math course (preferably statistics or calculus). Not having these classes may make you less competitive than other applicants who do have them. However, other aspects of your application may make you more competitive than others. It will depend on your mid-semester grades as well as your high school record (for those applying in their second semester of college, the high school record becomes more important as we have a very limited college record upon which to base a decision) as to whether or not you’re admitted as well as your essay, extracurricular activities, etc. If you are not admitted for the Fall 2011 you can contact our transfer dean and she will advise you on whether or not another semester will make you a competitive applicant and she will likely advise you to take a transferable math and science at that time).

Good luck

while you’re on the subject of competitive classes, could you comment on whether or not my schedule is competitive for fall 2011 admission?

Fall 2010: Calculus, Environmental Geology, Intro to Psych, Intro to Anthropology, Global History and Freshmen Seminar
Spring 2011: Microeconomics, Intro to Sociology, Intro to Islam (300 level class), English II, Intro to Ethics and Honors Wellness.

William & Mary is by far by first choice school. I really hope my essay shows how much I want to go there!

Thanks W&M Admissions! I’m going to try and get into a stat class. Does it make a difference if I have AP credit for a science course?

McBainTrain, your classes look great. You have math, science, social science, English, and religion. Not sure the history class will transfer but it’s a history class so you’ve covered the basic course areas.

surfwakesnow, it depends on your AP score. We don’t give credit based on whether or not your current college gave you credit. We ask you to resubmit your AP scores to see if we give credit. You can look on page 50 of the W&M course catalog (http://www.wm.edu/offices/registrar/documents/catalog/UGCatalog.pdf</a>) to see if we would award you credit for your score. If we do, keep in mind we require one biological and one physical science so it doesn’t hurt to take one anyway. You may want to note in your application that you didn’t take science because you’ll get AP credit for it and plan to take any remaining science at W&M should you be admitted

how generous is w&m when it comes to financial aid for transfer students? Is there someone I can talk to?

Financial aid is entirely need based and we’re just as generous with that for transfers as we are for freshmen. If you’re in-state, we will generally meet 100% of your demonstrated need as shown by the FAFSA. If you’re out-of-state, we generally meet 80% of your demonstrated need. Need is met through a combination of loans, grants, and work-study depending on what you may be eligible for. Unfortunately there are not any scholarships for transfer students (aside from athletic scholarships).

Just submit your FAFSA by March 1 (same deadline as the transfer application deadline) to be considered for need-based aid.

If you have additional questions you can contact the Financial Aid Office at 757-221-2420 but they will not be able to give you any specifics on what your individual aid package might be until they’ve been able to review your FAFSA.
