Antuulien explain a "high GPA’? what did the admissions counsellor say a high GPA is?

Got my acceptance email Thursday morning around 8:30 am!

I was a first time applicant and had everything submitted to them by September 4th (on Wolverine access it says October 9th because of the delay in downloading on their end). I think the whole “you must be a junior to have a chance to get accepted” mindset is bogus.

My HS Stats:
GPA: unweighted: 3.9 weighted: 4.8
SAT math: 760
SAT reading 680
Lot’s of leadership positions and extracurriculars.

College Stats:
Out of State applicant
Northwestern University
First semester sophomore/currently attending community college at home (FL) for the Fall
Cum GPA: 3.84
Transferable credit to U of M (completed): ~30 Credit Hours
Transferable credit to U of M (to be completed): 15 Credit Hours
Total potential transferable credit by January 2014: ~45 hours.
Panhellenic sorority member
Engineering student
20+ hours of work/week

Northwestern runs on the quarter system, so I really got screwed because about 1/3 of my classes that I took at Northwestern were deemed non-transferable and each of my classes that do transfer to Michigan accounted for only 2.67 credit hours instead of 4. So thank the Lord for AP scores coming in clutch.

I was SO nervous because I thought that I would not have anywhere near enough college credit based off of the posts that I was reading online and because I was coming from a school not on the semester system. I even decided to stay home this Fall and take courses at a community college because they were semester courses and were already deemed equivalent on the online database.

Like lulu32, I did not take a single blow off class in college. I think that the rigor of the courses that you take in college and the college that you attended prior to applying weigh in heavily on the decision. Northwestern is an excellent school, and I am sure that coming from there was huge for me. Also, both of my parents are alumni and worked for the university and my grandpa earned his master’s degree from U of M, so the family ties probably helped a lot too.

I honestly think that the admissions counselors are not in the business of denying students. They aren’t looking for the flaws in an application so that they have reason for rejection. Rather, they are looking for potential in an applicant and distinction from the other transfer applications. But that is just my opinion!!

Good luck to you all! Hopefully my post helped some of you who were wondering about statistic stuff :)

Go blue!

Chickenfried,

when she spoke to me she was referring to my GPA, and so didn’t give a figure. Mine is a 4.0. However, this was the impression I was given concerning the GPA aspect of things. I’m sorry I don’t have a definitive number, but if I had to hazard a guess I’d say anything over a 3.8 would probably put a body in that category.

Thank you guys!!

My stats:
Out of state- Penn State
gpa- 3.68 honors student
45 credits complete after this semester with 6 IB credits.
Dean’s List
Some leadership clubs etc.

I hope everyone finds out soon GO BLUE!!

I agree with LetsGoBlue94, the rigor of college classes do matter!! UofM doesn’t want to see that you have a great gpa but with easy classes. As a freshman I took many classes designed for sophomores. I think one of the reasons people get rejected is the lack of credits and rigor. They want realistically, 40-55 credits completed or in the process of being completed when you apply. UofM is not easy academically, so they have to make sure the students they admit can handle it

Good luck to everyone that has yet to hear back!! Everyone should hear back at least by Thanksgiving! Remember, they can’t keep transfer students waiting like high school kids.

i do not understand what y’all mean when you mention “blow-off classes”? If you are applying to LSA, and you are an Sociology major for example the majority of kids only are taking 100-200 level intro classes. I understand for engineering or pre-med its different but if you are at a community college and want to transfer to Umich, you may only be limited to 100-200 level intro classes and the course offerings will be greatly limited compared to Umich unless your at a 4 year school. The whole rigor of curriculum and “blow-off” class thing is false, i know for LSA that Umich transfer mainly credit from intro and 100-200 level courses ( nothing too specific). Also, rigor of curriculum is highly subjective, an engineering student would think that an Intro to Art History would be a “blow-off classes”, but maybe an Arts major would not?

Congratulations LetsGoBlue94! I applied a week after you so hopefully I (and the rest of us) will hear back next week!

Also, why did you decide to leave Northwestern?

Thank you thes1tuation!!

I really was not a fan of the quarter system, private school, and it’s a relatively small school. Don’t get me wrong, I learned a lot and it really is an excellent school, but just not for me. I grew up a huge Michigan fan and Northwestern just does not have the same kind of camaraderie. I think I am more excited about going to Michigan than I ever was about going to Northwestern.

Good luck to you!!
