So what do students usually do in the winter when the whole campus is covered in snow and the temperatures are way below freezing? When I visited a few days ago it was 80 and everyone was sitting on the lawns or throwing frisbees. That was the picture of college that I had in my mind, but I heard that in the winter the campus gets deserted.

Life goes on in the cold. There is still plenty to do and a snowy day on campus is always a blast. During the winter there are basketball and ice hockey games, lots of activities before Christmas, the Middlemarch dance and scavenger hunt, parties, and a social life. You just need to buy a good coat and boots and the weather will not deter you.

i would say the only thing the weather stops is the strolling and laying in the grass. like dhrbc07 said, the parties dont stop, sports dont stop, classes dont stop. yeah it gets to be a pain after a couple of weeks but it doesnt effect life as much as you think it would. the second it gets over 50 degrees kids start chilling outside. we were in bathing suits in 65 degrees the other day..

campus isnt deserted the people just congregate inside. probably the same at any other college in new england unless the people are dumb enough to want to sit outside in 20 degrees.

New Englanders are a pretty tough bunch. A little snow and cold never hurt anyone. Just invest in a great deal of winter wear (and that includes hats, scarves, gloves and boots) and you will be fine. Layering is important.
The winters can be long though. I learned a long time ago to not pack my winter gear away until Memorial Day.

D thought she would hate the winters, but she stayed in Boston after graduation last May, and has no plans to move anywhere else! Some of the big snowstorms were the best of times at BC--she fondly remembers watching seniors snowboard out of the second floor windows of the Mods--the snow had drifted so high!

I agree the winters can be long, but they are just as long in NJ cold but with no snow! We are just now starting to have nice weather, besides BC has Hockey!!! and Boston is so close by, my son just put in his deposit for next year and is really looking forward to it- he wants to bring his snowboard!

Mom43 - BC needs your hockey-loving son. My H and I attend a few games each year and my BC D had tickets as well. We are always surprised how few students show up for games. I think as BC is becoming more of a national school vs. regional, the hockey fans are becoming fewer. Too bad - It is such a great sport.

Dogwood- we are all big Ice Hockey fans, my son played in High School but the BC club is probably so good that he may not make it. He was watching the frozen four games here in NJ. I know he can't wait to go to those games! (that's not the only reason he chose BC) lol!

Mom43 - He'll love the Beanpot then. That is a local tournament played between BC, BU, Harvard and Northeastern. It is played late January/early February on two back to back Monday nights. BU has had a little monopoly, but BC won it this year. Local bragging rights are up for grabs each year. I wasn't living here then, but I guess many Beanpot fans were stranded at the old Garden during the Blizzard of '78. My H and I are big hockey fans, but season tickets would just involve too much time. We got to about 5 games this year. There is a lottery for student tickets. I think most students get half season, but I think it is easy to get tickets for other games. The students could probably answer that better than me. Of course, BU is the big rival. The rivalry was written about a few years ago in an article in Sports Illustrated. Hopefully, you'll get up for a few games as well. I'm sure you know this already, but your son will love BC. My D is already sad that this fall will begin her senior year.

Dogwood- I am really happy about his decision to go to BC! I am looking forward to coming up to visit him and going to a Hockey game. It's funny you mention the beanpot, I never heard of it, but when my H mentioned to a friend of his (another huge hockey fan) who went to BU, that our son is going to BC , he just screamed Nooooooo! and then laughed and asked to get him tickets to Beanpot.
For fun my H went over to watch a Flyers game with his BC hat on, when he got there the friend was wearing a t-shirt that said " I hate BC" . What a rivalry! Can't wait for the fall- will have to find out about those tickets!

Mom43 - fyi - Parents' weekend is 9/26-9/28. You might want to get your hotel reservations now. Boston is pretty crowded during the fall and the Sox are playing the Yankees that weekend, so it will be a busy, crowded weekend. You do want to get tickets for the "Pops on the Heights" concert that Friday night. It is at Conte Forum, is usually sold out (students do attend with their families) and it's a lot of fun. A boxed dinner is included and depending on the tickets you purchase, drinks (wine/beer) are included. It is an event to raise money for a scholarship fund. If you get there early on Friday, you can attend classes and there is usually a reception that afternoon as well. The football game is Saturday (playing URI this year) and the Sunday Mass (outdoors) is especially nice. You can purchase your tickets during Orientation. You can also check out the weekend on the BC site (although not sure if it is updated for '08, but you can at least get a feel for what goes on that weekend).
As for the BC/BU rivalry - the BC students have a special cheer for the BU kids - "It s*** to BU." Not nice, but I don't think they will ever abandon it.

Dogwood- thanks for the info about parents weekend, we will plan ahead- and also will see about the tickets to the concert and football game, we will be able to arrive by Friday afternoon! I am glad to hear your D has had a wonderful college experience- I too am excited for the visits to Boston, my first time there was this past weekend, thats when my son decided he is attending! Everything was just great, he really felt like he could be at home there. I can't wait to see the rivalry between my H (with a son at BC) and his good friend who went to BU many years ago! Very funny- looking forward to orientation this summer.
