Wisconsin or Ohio State (polysci)

I am the same way! I want to major in political science, and I’m torn between the two schools.

Stats:
SAT: 1780 (took it once, expect to get 1900 or upper 1800’s in the fall and a 1250)
ACT: 27
GPA: 3.48 unweighted 4.2 weighted
5 AP’s through junior year, 3 AP’s senior year.

govt- 4
enviromental- 3
english- 3
stat- 3
world history- 2

I intern for my state senator and expect a letter of recomendation from him. I have over 500 hours of community service and multitudes of leadership positions from president of young democrats, to VP of class, to president of youth group, and I am very politically involved. 12-season athlete and captain of 2 sports.

I know I want to go to Wisconsin or Ohio State, but I’m so torn between the two. I’ve visited Wisconsin and I loved it, and I plan in visiting Ohio State this fall. I would greatly appreciate your input on both of the schools!

I’ve recieved a lot of help on the Wisconsin thread, but nothing on the Ohio State thread. Could I get some feedback please?

First, are you in state or out of state for Ohio State? Wisconsin? In my book, tuition is a factor. It may or may not be important for you.

If you are interested at all in OSU, I would apply as soon as you are able to apply (not sure when that opens up for 2010-2011 applicants).Your stats are good, but are not a guarantee of acceptance. Since OSU has rolling admissions, you should know fairly quickly.

A trip to OSU in the fall would be a great idea. I know the visits helped my daughter in the decision-making process.

I’m sorry, I don’t know anything about the political science dept., but my daughter is happy at OSU (engineering major). I thought it was too big, but she said it gets smaller by being in the honors program and/or once you are in your major classes.

I don’t know much about Wisconsin, so I can’t compare. But OSU is a great school for poli sci. It has always ranked very highly. In Columbus you have access not only to a lot of political internships, but also there’s lots of political activity in election years because Ohio is a large swing state. There’s also a John Glenn internship program where you can go live in Washington DC for a quarter, get housing, get course credit, have a government internship, etc.

OSU’s polisci dept is very good. I know recent graduates of the program that are at top grad programs in law and polisci.
And the poster above is right, OSU has the John Glenn program (which isn’t too difficult to get into if you really want it) which the people I’ve known who have done it have loved.
There’s not much of a difference in quality between Wisconsin and OSU in terms of polisci dept quality as far as I know, so it’ll really come down to which school you like more/how much each one costs. I can tell you, though, Ohio State is tons of fun, the professors are generally easy to get to know personally, and opportunities for research and engagement abound.
