Withdraw acceptance

My D just filled out the acceptance form for Washu. He is on the waiting list for some Colleges. If he is offered admission into those schools before May 1st, can he withdraw from Washu, as long as it’s before May 1st?

Withdrawing is not the issue. You can withdraw any time before school starts in September. A college can’t force you to attend against your will.

The issue is whether you will get your deposit back. You’ll have to read the fine print, but once you submit your deposit, it is probably not refundable and you will forfeit it if you withdraw. If you haven’t paid the deposit yet, you could see if you can wait until just before May 1 to pay it. Or if you have paid it and you’re having second thoughts, you might call WashU to see if they will return your deposit before May 1.

However, schools generally won’t take people off their waitlist until after May 1. That’s because they won’t know how large their incoming class is until everyone responds by May 1. In that case, if your daughter gets off the waitlist somewhere else after May 1 and takes that offer, then you will definitely forfeit your deposit to WashU.

She can withdraw from WashU anytime before she starts college.

If your D gets into a preferred college off a waitlist (would likely happen after May 1) then she should send an deposit to the new school and simultaneously inform WashU in writing that she will not be attending in the fall. The only penalty is losing the deposit at WashU.
