So I recently applied to the University of Michigan. I self reported my SAT on the Common App because I wanted to send it to some colleges, but I thought I would get the chance to not submit it to UMich, but it sent without asking if I wanted to submit my scores. The score is in their 20th percentile about, and I am out of state. I barely had the opportunity to take the SAT. UMich does allow me to send the PSAT score, which I did SIGNIFICANTLY better on. I sent that, but now they also see my poor SAT score. Would it be a bad idea to withdraw my application now and then reapply (taking out my SAT score), since it is before the application deadline?
If you plan on trying the SAT again, then no. It is very rare for UMich to reject EA. If they don’t accept they almost always defer.
If you are not planning on any more testing, then it really depends on the strength of the rest of your application.
@skieurope so you are saying that it would be completely fine if I withdrew my application and resubmitted it again? That would not hurt my chances or anything?
It won’t hurt, but I’m not sure how much it will help.
If you applied via the Common App, you would need to reapply using the Coalition App or vice versa
@skieurope but the SAT score is so low compared to what their standards are. I feel like even if I were to get deferred, I would end up just getting rejected
Now that UMich has an application on record, I would think (but I’m not sure) that they will always have your info on file, even if you withdraw your app and then re-submit.
Anyhow, after UMich receives all of your info (transcripts, LoRs, counselor report), they will reach out to you (and there will be a form in your Enrollment connect portal) and ask if you want them to consider your test scores…so you should answer no.

Ask your HS GC to help you, good luck.
@Mwfan1921 wow maybe I’m dumb then. I just withdrew it and resubmitted because I didn’t think it would hurt at all. They also already had all of my info, and my SAT was on file for them as one of my test scores. So I withdrew and submitted through the Coalition Application, without indicating any SAT scores. But I submitted my PSAT score. I talked to one of their admissions counselors and she told me how to do that. I also definitely wanted to apply by Early Action. Well I hope that withdrawing and resubmitting my application won’t hurt my chances in any way!
Good luck, but had you read the directions on the page I linked above, you would have known you communicate that you are applying TO at UMich after you submit your app and after they receive all of the application components (aside from test scores).
I certainly don’t think their setup is very easy to understand, and it isn’t really clear if they see scores (or not) that were self-reported in the CA.
@Mwfan1921 yes, I read it. I may have prematurely withdrew and reapplied, but as long as I get my transcript and everything else in by the 15th, hopefully it won’t matter too much that I reapplied.
So always contact the schools to verify BTW. I would of told you not to withdraw. Yes they will know. How that affects you is the question mark. What was this score that you were worried about BTW?
@Knowsstuff the score was a 1310, but I am out of state
@Knowsstuff @Mwfan1921 will they think much of it? Will they just use the SAT score I originally submitted or because I withdrew and reapplied, will they see that as terrible and just reject my application?
No one knows but it’s a 28 Act. But this is just one factor. What’s your unweighted GPA. What else makes you stand out like with Ecs?
I know several people who submitted 27 Act then 34 Act after. They will always take your higher numbers. But if your GPA isn’t there then it’s hard to make a case. Some kids are lopsided but the rest of their application isn’t.
@Knowsstuff my school doesn’t calculate my UW GPA, but when I did it came out to about 3.71. My weighted is a 4.07 on a 4.83 scale (its weird). I’ve gotten mostly A’s (with a few B+'s), in the hardest courseload I could take. My extracurriculars include a bunch of leadership, and I connected that in my essay. I don’t know if I really have anything that’s standout, but my friend had slightly worse EC’s, a worse GPA, and I think a little better essays than I did, and he got in (that was 2 years ago though). So I would guess I wouldn’t get in, but you never know. I posted my full application profile on a post before, if you can see that, if you want to check it out
So if you can get all or mostly As through midterm then you got a shot
Plus you know someone from “your” school that got in with lower GPA etc. You are only compared to your school and knowing the school history (if there is one) can be telling
@Knowsstuff so for senior year (this year), I am in 5 AP classes and so far I have all A’s through the first quarter (it equates to about a 4.49 GPA). But that’s just quarter one. The only thing I’m not worried about is UMich seeing that I reapplied and then them automatically rejecting or just not at all considering me or something like that
AP only counts if you pass the exams for credit. As for UMich, I don’t see why you’re so concerned; It’s not Yale. I would worry more about your low SAT scores. It seems you did OK through freshman year and then went off the rails.
@MassPE wait what do you mean I did ok though freshman year and then went off the rails? In what way? In a good way? And based off of what? Sorry, I’m just confused haha. And I know, I just want to have a chance at UMich. I have gotten into Michigan State, Baylor, and the University of Dayton already, but I would love to go to UMich (if I somehow were to get in)
Your own words: "The score is in their[UMich] 20th percentile about, and I am out of state. I barely had the opportunity to take the SAT. UMich does allow me to send the PSAT score, which I did SIGNIFICANTLY better on. Most kids improve from the PSAT to the SAT. None of the schools you mention are academic powerhouses.
@MassPE oh yeah. the PSAT was from junior year though. And those three schools (well maybe not Baylor just because of its kind of low acceptance rate) were safeties. I just want to make sure that even though I withdrew and reapplied, they’ll still consider my application like they would a regular application
