Hey, this is my friends post-name, but I’m gonna use it. I am a junior in the IB program, planning on getting my full IB diploma, and I have a 2.84 unweighted, 3.84 weighted, and a 1520 SAT. I know my GPA is bad but I have a strong upward trend (I finished Freshman year with a 2.25, so you can see why it is so low). My GPA solely for junior is a 3.6. I started a club called S.A.P.I.F., I have a year of varsity XC, I have a year of student government, I box, I have 2 years of Spanish Club and 2 years of film club, and I have volunteered at a local elementary school for 80 hours. I live in Gainesville, Florida, but want to go to school near Louisville, Kentucky (Within 3.5 hours driving time) because I have alot of family there. Where should I go/Could I get in?

oh, and by graduation I will have taken 14 AP/IB courses, 6 pre-IB courses, and 3 honors courses.

what school near louisville do you want to go to?

University of Kentucky

is this the same persoin?

UK is a pretty good school. i guess it's a typical public school though. it's very large and the campus is really spread out. i like it though. dorm rooms are like dungeons. you do have a low gpa, but that sat score is remarkably high for UK, so i'd say you'll be okay. most ppl that apply to UK take the ACT, but i'm pretty sure they accept SAT. also the UK application doesnt ask for essays or anything, just scores and grades and a list of EC's

Centre College in Danville

Give Vandy a try.

centre is excellent too, but danville is a small place with nothing to do. lexington is about 45 minutes away though. i heard centre has wayyyyy to many frats and soros. i have a few friends that are gonna go there though. they are nice ppl.

I really want to go to Centre. REALLY badly. My uncle and grandparents live in Louisville, and my Great Uncle lives in Lexington. My great Grandfather actually went to Centre and later became a U.S. congressman, his name is John Y. Brown Sr., I wonder if that would get me legacy there. I also visit the area often and could get an interview and I'm good with first impressions. As for U.K., I have 4 family members that went there, and one, my uncle Johnny (John Y. Brown Jr., the son of the one that went to centre) was the Governor of Kentucky. How much would these connections help in the admissions process?

Only immediatte family members, brothers, sisters, parents, grandparents, are considered for legacy standing at most schools. It might be different for those though, I dont know.

oh... I have 3 bro's and sis' at U of F and my my mom went there too, my dad went to Vandy, UGA and Duke. My Grandfather went to Suwanee - The University of the South. Man, I was hoping uncle Johnny and Grandpa Johnny's reputations might be able to help... Oh well.

Well, your other grandfather's can still help, and maybe uncle, you should check out the application and website for more information regarding specific schools. With legacy at Vandy you might have a decent shot and that's a top 20 school, I dont know how far that is from Louisville but it seems like a good match/reach to consider.

really? you think I could get into Vandy?

I think Centre will like your family connections. Definitely apply there.

I plan to apply to Centre EA, because I found out that although overall they accept about 69% of applicants, they accept 93% of those that apply EA. I am also going to visit there during spring break and interview, and probably again during the summer.

centre is a really good school and i doubt you would have any trouble getting in. its ranked as the top school for your money (i think). i live in KY and centre is where all the smart kids that dont wanna go out of state go (or Transylvania, which is also a really good school in lexington)

yea I'm applying to Transy too, my other Uncle, Benham, is an alum there, and good friends with the dean of admissions.

what part of KY do you live in?

extreme southeast KY, where VA TN and KY meet. i applied to transy before their priorty deadline. they said everyone who applies by then would be notified of their decision but i havent received a letter yet. grrrrrr. i'll call them tomorrow
