soooo i was just wondering if anyone knew what the dating scene is like at UCSC? I'm not trying to be shallow or anything but I just heard on some other forums that no one really dates at the school and everyone meets people outside of school. Any truth to that?

my sister met her boyfriend as a freshman at ucsc, they’ve been together for 6 years now! i know that doesn’t say much for casual dating, but there’s definitely people lookin for loves

It’s just like any other school… if you want to date, there are plenty of people available on or off campus.

A lot of my friends (including me) have noticed a lack of…interest in guys here, specifically Kresge and Porter. I asked my friend from Merrill how she felt about it and she said it was the same. Guys just don’t flirt as much I guess, and I’m used to very…er…persistent men in San Diego. But my guy friends are all so focused on school and partying, plus a lot of them have girlfriends from home.
The current couples I know either met each other at work or slept around a bit until they kind of fell for each other. Except this really adorable couple that met in class…but I don’t think any of them would be desirable to anyone else anyway…

haha thanks! I’m from san diego too! I mean I’m not too worried about it but i thought i would check. Is it hard to meet friends outside of your college do you think? and bananaslug how was the change from san diego to santa cruz?

I dunno I don’t really know many people who aren’t from Porter except a few from high school. You’re more likely to meet people from your sister college definitely. The change from San Diego was really drastic. Like I said, the dating thing was way different in that not every guy is trying to get laid which I think is because there aren’t really “parties”…it’s just more of kick-backs. Also, no one cares how you look here. In SD its all about appearances most of the time, but in SC it’s more of what you say and how you act that labels you, at least in my experience at Porter.

i think thats one of the things i like most about sc! I really like how chill everyone seems, i think it will be a nice break from San diego

^ one of the reasons im nervous about so cal. ive grown up in norcal my entire life and Im used to the chillness of everyone, and a lack of scene importance. I hope where I go wont be too looks centricated

Oh definitely! That’s what I love about SC too! It’s just that dating-wise, it’s a lot harder. But don’t worry. It might also be that because Porter had one small building last year, no one wanted to have the awkwardness of seeing someone every single day. So maybe in another college it’ll be different.

so basically… the dating scene here isn’t that good huh…
and i heard it’s harder for girls to find anyone cos of the huge female population?

isnt it 54% women…that’s not bad at all compared to other colleges! :]

The dating scene is decent. There is lots of young love in Santa Cruz.

woah woah the dating scene is perfectly fine! Don’t let anybody tell you differently. I’m a freshman at ucsc at Stevenson college. The first half of the year everyone is basically just meeting everyone and its mostly just hook-ups. Which is nice because you don’t want to settle down to fast when there are so many people to meet. But now, (we’re just about to start spring quarter) a lot of my friends are beginning to be in relationships. Trust me, the dating scene here is NOT slow.

hey emiloser22 how is stevenson? I think thats my first choice college right now :] do you live on the upper quad or lower quad?

I live in upper quad. Stevenson is awesome!!! All the kids are really chill and i feel like stevenson and cowell are the most “regular” colleges, meaning not like hippies and stuff or not super nerdy. Just laid-back and down to have fun. At first, the seperation between upper quad and lower quad was a little strong, and i barely knew anyone in lower quad! But after winter break and stuff and starting winter quarter i’ve gotten to know many ppl in lower quad and they’re just as awesome :] The cool thing about stevenson is that its SUPER close to the redwood park, Pogonip, i highly encourage you to hike there if you get the chance. Its also close to the gym so you will be more motivated to work out. Hope this helps. if you have any more questions i’d be happy to answer.
