Coup'la questions about the college communities.

I posted this in the another thread but it seemed like too much like a huge wall of text for it.

For the record, I'm a socially inept home schooled Asian guy from California who's way too worried about fitting in.

I'm a pretty nerdy guy considering I'm a computer science major and I'm into video games, anime, computers, all that stuff, but not to an obsessive extent.
I'm actually pretty laid back, silly, very open minded, excessively talkative, and I enjoy being lazy and just hanging out. I'm pretty serious when it gets down to academics, though.
I'm probably more of a "close group of friends" than a "heavy partier with tons of friends" type of person. To be honest, I'm not a partier at all and I'd like there to be at least some times in the building where I can focus. :/

I've been home schooled for most of my life so I ended up being really shy with very few, if any, friends, so I'd LOVE to meet new people.

Also...since my being home schooled and this being a college, the idea of dating is pretty much foreign to me so I'm wondering how the whole "dating scene" is there...and also wondering if the girls there are generally willing to deal with, and help a guy get through dating ineptitude? hahahaha >_>

This is probably a weirder question but, are the computer sciences/sciences/history/economics courses generally more male-oriented or are there a number of females who attend those classes as well?
I think I'd feel awkward if I were to ask girls who don't really have a common interest with me. :S

Also, do they have fields on campus where students can do sports, exercise, stuff like that? I'd like to get more active, but not really at a competitive level. Just something I can do to be more active, screw around with friends, and have fun.

I don't really plan on drinking or doing drugs, but I've heard there's a huge drug stereotype at UCSC? How is it there really? Do people seriously pressure drugs on to you? I would rather not be coaxed into it :S

How's the community at Crown? I feel like I'd fit in there the most, but I've heard a lot of not-so-great things about it. Boring, overly nerdy, awkward, anti-social, etc. :S

I've been told that 9/10 and Merrill are good fits too, but I'm keeping my options open at the moment. Anyone who's stayed there (Crown, Merrill, 9/10) or is staying there now; how is the community there and which would you personally say is the best fit for me?
I'm so stingy about this, lol.

You’ll get to meet TONS of new people during orientation week. No worries about classes, just lots of time to explore and try to memorize new names, heh.

Dating is different for everyone. Some people do the casual dating thing, some people go straight into boyfriend&girlfriend. I’m sure there are plenty of girls who are as inexperienced as you, and won’t mind if you’re a bit clumsy. Plus, if they really do like you, they’ll overlook those kind of things. :]

Of COURSE there are girls in computer science/economics/etc!!! Geez, did you grow up under a rock? (okay, maybe you kind of did) Especially in the natural sciences there are a lot of girls. Comp sci, maybe 1/4 to 1/3 of the class is female.

There is indeed a field that’s open to anyone who wants to use it. And a gym.

Drug. Stereotype. It was once very true, but these days, not at all. I’ve smelled pot maybe three times. If you want drugs, you have to search them out.

Crown is great. I’m very much like you, academic/party-wise and interest-wise. There are some huge nerds here, sure. But there’s also a good share of “normal” people who are here for the science community/academic aspect. And then there are plenty of people like me, who play video games, and read comics, but it’s a pastime and not our reason to be. There is some partying at Crown, but it’s a bit quieter and you have to know where to go. I honest to goodness love the community here.

Crown would be a good fit for you. Merrill as well, it catches its fair share of nerds too. 9/10 are the neutral choices. I don’t know any kind of person who would dislike it there.

I grew up in the central valley so living under a rock is an accurate representation. Haha.
Good to hear there’s fields and a gym. I’m a bit chunky so I figure this is the best time to get in shape and meet new people too.
And I’m glad to hear there’s at least some girls on the same boat as me. XD

I’m not really -opposed- to parties, considering there’s like a hundred thousand different ways to have a party and chances are I’ll probably have a good time at some.

I’m just kinda iffy on the stereotypical hardcore drinking/drugs parties that you hear about. I was raised in a close-knit catholic family and so…yeah you probably get it. :P

Right now I have Crown/10/9 in my 1/2/3 spots, what’s the realistic chance of getting into the top 1/2/3s?

Ohoho, different ways to party indeed. Don’t be surprised if you see parties involving pillow fights or nerf guns.

Very good chance of getting into your top choice. Even if you get into 9/10 and you decide you really want Crown, you can request to switch before the school year starts. It happened to two of my friends, but they switched into Crown no problem. :]

Haha, my kind of party. :P
