Wondering about incoming PoliSci Majors

I am an incoming freshman majoring in PoliSci, just wanted to see who else was majoring in it and when their orientation is. My orientation is june 2-4. Looking forward to seeing everyone!

I am, and my orientation is June 9-11.

I am, June 13-15 orientation

I know this doesn’t exactly fit with your question, but I am a Poli Sci major at FSU already. Just be prepared to have a new appreciation for intense reading, that’s all I am saying. But it is a good major, I like it so far. Good luck at FSU! It’s amazing!

@corysmith: I’m sure there’s a lot of writing involved also, right? What do you think we could do over the summer to prepare us for it?

Also, by intensive reading, what reading is there? like literature type or court cases or what?

The reading focuses a lot on theory. You will be taking care of your general education requirements for the most part until Junior year so this won’t be such an issue until then. And by the time you get to Junior year and start taking strictly major courses, you’ll be used to heavy reading by then already.

For example, my Political Science Research Methods class (which is required for everyone in the major) the ‘book’ was 400 pages long. I say ‘book’ because it was just a compilation of scanned pages the professor upload to Blackboard that we had to read. Now 400 pages may not seem daunting but the material is dense and it takes a while to actually comprehend and remember it.

Most of your classes will just be reading the material and testing. Term papers are a big thing but you’ll have plenty of time on that just don’t procrastinate with anything if you can help it.

Over the summer, I guess just keep up with reading, even if it’s just something like Harry Potter. If you fall out of reading for like 4 months it will make the task that more daunting when you come to FSU.

how far are you into the program?

I finished my political science degree. Most teachers didn’t expect me to open books - not until the upper level classes. I know this is sad, but it’s true for some of FSU’s classes.

A lot of my classes lectured & then we would have to use that information on the exam.
