Word of Advice for Indiana

Sorry, GBAMom, but I know what you mean. Well, remember, the bottom 25% is there for a reason, but that doesn't reflect the majority of the admitted students, nor does it lower the standards of the school. I feel sorry for anyone going in with a 2.7 gpa. I don't know how they'll survive there.

no, i'm not. and im not necessarily getting that money, that's what the head guidance counselor said she'd expect me to get.

also, i think my gpa is 3.0, it's 85/100. i've heard 4.0=95, 3.9=94, 3.8=93, and so on. i don't know if they weight in admissions, but maybe they counted honors or accelerated classes as more. i have 2 APs this year, but they didn't see my midyear grades (which don't even exist yet).

justcallmefunk, if you get the scholarship, I would love to read about it.

Good luck.

You're not too sure of your gpa? That's amazing. How will you get through those math classes at Indiana?

I mean seriously, you come on here leaving message after message bragging how easy it is to get into IU, because you got in with "....like a 2.7 gpa", and now you're saying you THINK it's 3.0?

Are you here to share factual information or just stir the pot? Just wondering....
;-)

hey hey now just to let you know im asian and theres nothin wrong about bein a minority! ha maybe justcallmefunk has something special tat makes him qualify for scholarship ya never know.... ( are asians considered minority at IUB? i know here on west coast asians arent a minority unless your thai or something.)

you guys, first of all i'm a girl, so call me she! (not that i really care).

I'm not sure of my GPA because my school gives out number grades and it is never calculated out of a 4.0. Over my 3 years of high school, my cumulative average is 85/100. I know that. I THINK that is equal to a 3.0/4.0, but absolutely no one I know uses these numbers, which is probably why I sound ignorant to you.

Maybe they want me for their crew team. ;) Oh how I'd love to row in college.

Now, now, Dcho, don't go putting font into my fingers. ;-) I never said there was anything wrong with being a minority, did I? But that WOULD be the only way a student would get in with lower than normal standards. I think we all know this, don't we?

I'm not sure Asians are considered a URM anymore.

heh im jsut kidding aimhigh im sure ur not a racist or anything, damn asians arent considered a minority in midwest anymore? man tat suxs i was hoping indiana would give me some aid for tat :( jsutcallmefunk dont do crew in college man! tat ***** is harrrrrd, my bro signed up for it in college for 1 week and he quit, waking up early to row a boat man tat is crazy lol

this is my third year of high school rowing though, and i love the sport. it's amazing! i know it's an insane college commitment, but i want to try and see if i like it at that level. :D

No kidding...way to lighten things up, Dcho...too funny!

if you've already been admitted, you'd know about your scholarship money justcallme... the offering comes with the admissions packet

I have a "Selective Scholarship Application." I have to send two recommendations, write two essays and send them a resume in addition to the FAFSA.

My letter reads

"Dear Kimberly,

Congratulations! I am pleased to inform you of your admission to Indiana University Bloomington for the fall 2006 semester. I am also pleased that your academic record qualifies you to compete for selected scholarships. Please complete the enclosed Selective Scholarship Application...."

It came in a folder with other papers and housing materials. You really think I didn't get in?

well i believe u ( i got that ssa application also...) and i tink the scholarships like the IU faculty award they give you when your accepted are like the general awards given to someone tats accepted and the SSA awards are like "special" scholarships you can get based on your stuf. i tink

any idea how much the scholarships range from?

i'm not sure if i want to go there, but it's over $28,000 OOS, and i don't think i could justify paying that much for a public school when i could go in-state.

Receiving the SSA doesn't mean you are guaranteed more scholarships. It means you are eligible for more scholarships, and you have to apply to them. They aren't as much as the faculty awards, most of them are only 1-4,000 per year.

justcallmefunk:
" You really think I didn't get in?"

Based on information you were giving out, are you serious with this question? You kept telling people how easy it was to get in, and you got in with only a 2.7 gpa. Then you told everyone you were guaranteed a scholarship of 4K a year, yet you're having to apply for a scholarship which isn't guaranteed and you're asking how much the scholarships are.

I think you may be a bit confused, which is fine....a lot of us are, but the lesson in all of this is to ask questions rather than making strong statements. You learn that way. ;-)

i did not say i was guaranteed any money. a guidance counselor at my school looked at my list, said "here. apply to indiana. you'll get in, you'll probably get money, and you'd love the school." she handed me an application. when i asked how much money she thought i'd get, she said $4,000 a year. that statement is all i'm claiming. i have no idea if i'm getting it, but i think there is a chance because she's been doing admissions with my school for years and years and she knows what she's talking about.

and for the last time, an 85 is not a 2.7! according to PR, it's a 3.0, and someone here said it was a 3.1. Different colleges reweight anyway, or weight honors or APs more, so it might have been higher for Indiana. Or maybe you can reply again and tell me I'm dumb because maybe Indiana doesn't reweight your transcript. I don't really care.

I have no idea if I'm getting any money. I've been totally honest on this stupid thread, stop accusing me of lying.

and I will stand by the statement that Indiana is an easy school to get into. I don't know about the increase of applications this year; if so, maybe it's different, but I think the past few years it's hovered around 80%. I remember an 81% figure.

regarding what i said about iub admissions being easy in the past - that doesnt mean its a crapy school, it just means it's easy to get in generally but getting into one of iub's top programs is probaly more difficult. heh forgot to tsay this cuz iu is my 1st choice and if i didnt say this then it would mean im a dumbass.. if anyone gets the joke....

DCHO, first of all, if you read my response to her you'll see I was quite calm in my tone, unlike the two of you. Secondly, I merely pointed out her inconsistencies, which continued in her reply back to me. Finally, since you know I'm an adult, I would appreciate it if you would kindly watch your fingers and communicate without having to resort to the "f" word, okay?
