funk...you must have had plenty of those A's and B's to bring up "tons of C's and D's." Your SAT's were respectable, which probably helped, but it's hard to believe that IU ignored those low grades and average GPA. Looks like you got lucky.

they just want your money if youre out of state and dont have high enough stats for them to have to give you scholarships

i mean, i don't have my transcript memorized, and the grading isn't the same, it's out of 100. but i've gotten a fair amount of 75s and 80s, along with a couple 65s and 70s. My general average is an 85.

IU took me because their average SAT is, I think, 1104? Mine was 180 points higher. That's what I think, anyway.

Is it really that horrible to have a B average?

"Is it really that horrible to have a B average?"

No, but only the bottom 25% of the entering class will have that, so you can't look at that 25% and make the statement that the school isn't that hard to get into and you got a ton of C's and D's on your report card. For the remaining 75%, the standards were higher.

A 1280 SAT also is probably in the top 10% of applicants, so that had a lot to do with his acceptance. Also, an 85 average is about a 3.1, right around the average mark. I don't think it was a fluke that this candidate was admitted.

From your 12/11 post, Wolves. "Tons of C's and D's" in his core academic courses like math and science? Did any of his A's and B's come from fluff like basketweaving and gym? Pull those out of the GPA and recompute. The SAT must have saved the day, but I still say that funk hit the lotto.

I agree, GBAMom. I just spent five minutes looking at the college profiles given to DS by his high school counselor and comparing the info against the princetonreview.com site. With regard to average gpa requirements for admission, the college profiles he received are either right on the money or 1/10th of a point lower or higher than indicated on princetonreview.com. Indiana U, which doesn't list a gpa requirement on that site, or their own site (that I could find), shows an average gpa of 3.7 with a minimum of 3.0 on his profile. I know my nephew got some C's (no D's) on his report card and a 32 on ACT and did NOT get into IU, and when my brother called to ask why, they pointed to his gpa and the C's he'd gotten.

Wow, no D's and a 32 ACT converts higher than jcmfunk's 1280 SAT. With rolling admissions first-come/first-serve, did nephew apply later rather than sooner?
jcmfunk...The Gods were looking down on you the day your application was up for review.

dd got in. 3.29 GPA. All regular courses with exception of Honors French.
ACT only 22. No D's or F's, an occasional C. Out of State.

BGAMom, I'm not sure when nephew applied, and it was a few years ago, but I don't think they've loosened their requirements over the years THAT much.

Patsimae, the counselors at IU told the group DS was in when he went for a tour that they look a little more at the gpa than the test scores (ACT or SAT), so the 3.3 gpa would have been more important to them than her 22 on the ACT. I also think 3.3 looks better than the minimum requirement of 3.0.

We're in IL, too.

I'm still wondering how the poster in the other thread got in with a 2.7 gpa.

Or am I missing something - like both of them are URM's?

I must have missed that...a 2.7? Sorry to say, but these posts have been a downer tonight. Sort of dilutes DS's acceptance when I read this stuff.

i have just about the same stats as justcallmefunk, slightly worse grades, not a single xc or esssay or rec or anything, and i got into iu too so justcallmefunk wasnt just some fluke to have gotten in i think. i think youre all making it out to be a lot harder than it actually is

It really sounds like a great school Aim High. Now was your son admitted?

HS counselor told her not to bother applying to UIUC, so it was nice she got into one Big Ten school.

Yes, but that's the difference between a student who gets accepted, and a student who gets accepted with a 24,000 scholarship.

you are ridiculous. they accept so many people, and no, i didn't get my grades from basketweaving, i was in accelerated english classes for four years, honors for two, and have two APs this year.

oh, i'm doing stuff for merit aid because they told me i qualified. the head guidance counselor at my school said i'd probably get $4,000 a year.

how do you like that? you think it was my lucky day, and i'm getting merit money. life is funny, and you don't know what you're talking about.

Good point, Wolves...but if I read one post that says a lousy 2.7 received so much as a dime, I'll have DS throw in the towel...LOL!!

Yes, Patsimae, my son is going. He hated U of I, Champaign and a couple of other schools he visited, but really loved University of Iowa and IU. He's also considering Ohio State and has gotten into a few other schools, but IU is making it hard for him to say no to them. He's coming out of a really large school, so he thinks he'll prefer a bigger college. I only wish it wasn't a five hour drive. ;-0

You're getting 4,000 a year with a 2.7 gpa? I hate to be the tacky one here, but I will be and just come out and ask. Are you a minority?
