Word of Advice for Indiana

IUB has already announced that they will be doing major repairs on Kelley this year (probably already started this summer). They know that the Kelley school's image promotes the school's image--so they are responding appropriately.

As far as the counseling, I agree it has been less than stellar--and some of the honors programs have that same "stuck upness" you find at Kelley, but according to the people on here who went to the orientation programs this summer, there is a bit of an improving trend.

I'm still a bit of a skeptic also--especially concerning the honors programs--which seem to be geared only to recruit incoming high schoolers and not at all focused on high-achieving university students, but there seems to be some indication that IU does put focus on its weak points in an attempt to improve them--even if it does so only in a responsive, and not proactive manner.

P.S. The acceptance rate for those attending starting in Fall 2007 at Indiana University at Bloomingon was 69.8% (down from the 80% listed as the number for Fall 2006)

The numbers for this year's class (Fall 2008 offers and acceptances) won't be official until around October or so, but has been estimated at 65%.

Indiana University Bloomington expects another record-setting freshman class: IU News Room: Indiana University

One little tidbit in the article I found particularly interesting was:

"Thompson said the class also will include one of the largest groups of first-year students from the state of Indiana ever to enroll at IU Bloomington."

This says to me that IUB is perhaps doing a better job of marketing the automatic merit awards to instate students. I think those same awards are keeping some talented students instate--as a regular on here (was it calcruzer?) predicted they might. On a personal note, I can say that those awards will make it very difficult for my D to choose another school when everything is factored into the equation.

I also think national worries about the economy are playing a role here. It would be interesting to know if other state U's are experiencing a similar rise in instate students.

I don't really know how one class will impact the %age of OOS students overall, but I'm curious. There have been a number of discussions on here regarding the OOS percentage.

still in Indiana.. its

1) Notre Dame
2) Purdue
3) Indiana

Purdue does not have a distinctive better reputation than Indiana.

Okay, let's look at the USNW Graduate school majors rankings (the undergraduate rankings--of which there are only 5 or so--come out next Friday, August 22). This are where these schools rank nationally in each program at the graduate level.

Business: Indiana 20, Purdue, 33, Notre Dame 34
Law: ND 22, Indiana 36, Purdue has no law school
Medicine: None of these schools has a medical school
Engineering: Purdue 15, ND not ranked in top 50, Indiana has no engineering programs
Education: Indiana 19, Purdue 68, ND has no education school at the grad level.
Biology: Indiana 29, Purdue 42, ND 95
Chemistry: Purdue 22, Indiana 34, ND 62
Computer Science: Purdue 19, Indiana 48, ND 65
Earth Science: Indiana 34, Purdue, 43, ND77
Mathematics: Indiana and Purdue tied at 28, ND 44
Physics Purdue 36, Indiana 45, ND 56
Nuclear Physics: Purdue 3, Indiana 6, ND has no nuclear physics program
Library and Info Studies: Indiana 7, Purdue and ND have no grad programs in this field
Criminology: Indiana 20, Purdue and ND have no grad programs in this field
Economics: Indiana and Purdue tied at 36, ND--not ranked (below 50)
English: Indiana 23, ND 36, Purdue 56
History: Indiana 19, ND 32, Purdue 68
Political Science: Indiana 25, ND 41, Purdue 58
Psychology: Indiana 22, Purdue 66, ND 136
Sociology: Indiana 11, ND 49, Purdue 58
Fine Arts: Indiana 30, ND 106, Purdue 134
Public Affairs: Indiana 2 (tied with Harvard just behind Syracuse), ND and Purdue have no grad programs in this field
Non-Profit Management: Indiana 1, Purdue and ND rankings unknown

Other than engineering (in which Indiana has no program), law, chemistry, physics (including nuclear physics) and computer science, Indiana is equal or outranks the other schools in every discipline listed (math and economics were ties). And even when outranked, Indiana was very competitive nationwide (6th in nuclear physics, 34th in chemistry, 36th in law, and 48th in computer science).

I think the peer assessment ratings show, to an extent, how the school is regarded by academia. Notre Dame is a 3.9, Purdue is a 3.8, Indiana is a 3.7. In 2007, Indiana was a 3.8.

I'm no adcom rep, but I'd like to think that they look at applicants holistically. If someone's GPA is on the low side, but that person has other aspects of his application that truly shine, then that kid is IN.

I believe the ballet program is the second most difficult ballet school to get accepted to after Juilliard. So no, Kelley isn't the only selective program at IU.

IU doesn’t look at things holistically hahahah. It’s not selective enough to do that in most of their majors. They’re almost a purely numbers based school for everything EXCEPT the Jacobs school.

What are the reqs. for Kelley?

3.1-3.2 GPA or better after the first year, and a B or better in A-100, K-201, M-118/119, and E-201 is usually the minimum requirements.

And one correction to earlier post - Julliard has ballet but ballet is not its primary focus.

lakeeffect, I know, I was just referring to how difficult it is to gain entrance into Juilliard’s ballet program.

No harm intended Eliza B - I was just pointing out that IU is probably #1 for ballet, while Julliard is #1 for modern/contemporary. The Jacobs ballet dept tends to attract a lot of students who might otherwise have gone the trainee/apprentice route with a company (or those who have already done that) rather than attending college.

There is a lot more than meets the eye when it comes to admission decisons. I got in with a 2.93 gpa and only one AP class on my belt. I got direct admissions to the kelley business school with a prestige 5k a year scholarship. Dont be discouraged to apply because of some of the numbers all of you may see on this thread. just do it. Good luck to all of you.

p.s. the only thing that may have had a significant effect is my 29 ACT. but apart from that everything else was below the average for admittted students.

i have a 3.0 and i got a 1480 ( low, i know. =/ ) on my SAT. but i have been taking good classes like APlit, APUSH, Honors English, Spanish 4. I am a minority group and speak three languages. i am part of spanish club. what do you think my chance is for getting into Indiana University in Bloomington? i really want to go there and have been so nervous for the longest time about the application process.

Do you mean 1480 on all three parts of the SAT?

If the person didn’t mean all three parts, then the score wouldn’t be low. (Two parts would mean getting a 740CR/740M equivalent–good enough for most Ivy league schools and Duke and Georgetown)

A 1480 on three parts means getting about a 490CR/490M/480W on the test–which is below the average of college test takers in total (who average right around a 1540 or so–520CR/510M/510W)

As posted here:
<a href=“Biggest, brightest IU Bloomington freshman class has increasingly Hoosier make-up: IU News Room: Indiana University”>Biggest, brightest IU Bloomington freshman class has increasingly Hoosier make-up: IU News Room: Indiana University;

IU-B’s averages for last year’s incoming class were right around 1151 for two parts (576CR/575M)–and for the business school they were around 1240 or so (620CR/620M), so as you can see, tmr91’s current scores are a bit low compared to the IU-B averages.

I give tmr91 about a 50-50 chance of admittance. Things in tmr91’s favor: 1–he/she did get a 3.0, which IU-B essentially requires, 2–he/she is a minority and speaks three languages and IU-B is trying to increase its diversity, and 3–he/she did take a lot of difficult courses (APs and the like). I’m sure IU-B would like to see more than just one EC and a higher SAT score, though.

IU DOSE have a Medical school!! It is at IUPUI!! :)
