How are the gyms down in U of I? Are they always crowded, or is it easy to find an open machine? Is there an additional fee for using the gyms?

There are mainly two gyms that people work out at: IMPE and CRCE (also called WIMPE because it's smaller than IMPE).

IMPE is on the west side (across the street from 6 pack) and WIMPE is on the east side (right next door to Allen Hall). WIMPE was just rennovated so it's really nice. IMPE is pretty crowded on the weekends, but you can still get in a good workout. I think IMPE will be under rennovations this year, so it might pretty crowded at times. Once rennovations for IMPE are finished though, the two gym facilities will be really nice. There isn't an extra fee for using the gyms; it's technically included in the student recreation fees.

crce/wimpe is reaaalllly nice. i worked at the gym at IU and trust me, its a hole compared to the crce.

do the gyms have punching bags?

anybody know? im still curious... i like to kickbox and it would be nice if uiuc had some heavy bags in the gym

LOL, still curious about the punching bags. They probably do. Ill be taking tae kwon do up there so we should spare sometime.

i was told at virginia tech they had a whole room of punching bags, but when i visited i only found a room with one hanging bag in it.. cant even practice kicking people's knees in on that! Vanderbilt has one bag, too. When i visited Cal Poly, they had like 10 of those standing bags mounted on plastic barrels, and they actually had muay thai classes really cheap (3 days a week at $40 a quarter), but again, no low kicking on those bags...

and i just may take you up on that offer :D im sure they have a martial arts club.

and i just looked it up. i do muay thai, but at UIUC they have clubs for:

Goshin Jitsu Combat Sports & Self-Defense, Jeet Kune Do and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Club, Illini Judo Club, Illini Ju Jitsu Club, Illinois Shotokan Karate, Shuri-Ryu Karate, Kendo/Naginata Club, Kuk Sool Won, Hwarang Tae Kwon Do, Illini Tae Kwon Do Club, Tae Kwon Do at UIUC, Illini Ving-Tsun Association, Illini Aikido,
