Worst Book You've Read in High School?

I read through this thread and was amazed at how many books that I read in HS are on this list and I went to the HS in the 70’s.

I despised Catcher in the Rye (as have each of my children who has read it currently), All Quiet on the Western Front and The Great Gatsby(though I did grow up to live in one of the Eggs).

My absolute least favorite books have, thankfully, not been mentioned on this list so maybe they have finally been retired. Maggie, A Girl of the Streets, by Stephen Crane(his better known book, The Red Badge of Courage, was not much better) and Sister Carrie by Theodore Dreiser. By the time the title character in each was dead, I was ready to rejoice.

For historical perspective, in HS I also read Lord of the Flies, Heart of Darkness, Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet, Macbeth and Jane Eyre from this list. In middle school, I read Oliver Twist, Gulliver’s Travels, A Separate Peace, Animal Farm and 1984 (a dozen years BEFORE 1984).

Ethan Frome DEFINITELY. So ****ing depressing and the ending made no sense whatsoever

Why did EVERYONE else’s high school read 1984? It’s my favorite novel and I’ve never had it for school, I would have that section of the class easily taken care of.

Also, stop knocking Shakespeare, you’re offending my theatre kid sensibilities (unless it’s Hamlet. Screw Hamlet)

OH. I forgot about All Quiet On the Western Front. yeah, that one was pretty bad too.

I tend to lodge bad books into the darkest pit of my memory

I think it sucks to have to read any play like a book, but it’s an amazing play with a lot of depth, and one of my favorite Shakespearean plays.

My absolute favorite is King Lear. I can’t decide if I wish it were taught in English classes or glad that it isn’t so that kids won’t hate it.

Romeo and Juliet was both cheesy and a bore. I didn’t enjoy the entire quarter we spent on it. Anthem was pretty bad as well.

I hated reading Of Mice and Men. Sooo pointless

I loved OMAM. My least favorite was Great Expectations.

See all of you read the standard English books that everyone reads but since I’m in Journalism we read junk.

A Lesson Before Dying
Black Boy
Teacher Man
What is the What
Anthem

But from regular 9th grade English Siddhartha was my favorite <3

Seems like a lot of people hate The Scarlet Letter. It is a torture. I had tried to read it in my free time, I eventually gave up and thought that I was probably not smart and deep enough to comprehended that book. But it seems like a lot of people hate it, yeah even on CC, what a surprise.

It’s a tie between Wuthering Heights, Romeo and Juliet, and The Awakening

So far, Julius Caesar.

Romeo & Juliet & Kite Runner aren’t far behind.

Although, I guess I don’t think Kite Runner’s bad, but it’s such a slow read and I’ve never disliked a character in anything as much as I dislike Amir.

I’m about 100 pages in, and need to finish the remaining 270 by Thursday… have had the book for 2-3 weeks now.

The Catcher in the Rye -_-

Ethan frome

Once you finish it, tell me your opinion on Kite Runner. It was one of my favorite reads and I also disliked Amir with a passion at the beginning. ^^

My favorite book read would definitely be East of Eden. I wasn’t forced to read it; it just happened to be a big book given to AP Lit students in my school and I’ve never regretted picking it up.

In cold blood. I couldn’t sleep for a month. And I still check my car before I get in.

While I actually enjoyed the parts I read, we had to read all of Madame Bovary in two weeks. It has beautiful language but is just incredibly dense and long winded with an intricate plot. Of the about 7 chapters we had to read each night, I only read like 3 or 4 and used Shmoop for the rest.

However the actual book I hated the most would probably be Catcher in the Rye.

Didn’t like Fahrenheit 451.

Ethan Frome…

God awful book with an ending that is so out of place. Keeps making you think something interesting will happen then nothing.

Catcher in the Rye…
I mean really? Like half my AP Lit class thought it was stupid. Calling everything even himself fakes and all.
