I'll be starting as a freshman in the fall and I wanted to buy a camera to capture memories and for a hobby. Picture quality is really important to me so I was considering buying an entry level DSLR. Is this a good idea or not? Will I have time to use it? Or should I just save my money?

you will have time if you make time but be weary of theft. it is a good idea if quality is that important although i think smartphones now have great cameras already.

If you’re just going to be taking pictures of events and such, I think a phone camera is fine, or a CDC if you want. If you’re going to be taking pictures largely for art, then I’d recommend an entry-level DSLR. I have the Nikon D3000 (entry level, several years old) and it works great for this purpose. If you think you’re going to be using it mostly for “memories” and not art, though, I don’t really think it’s work it. Just my opinion. :)
