Would it be acceptable to take Calc 1 for Pass/No Pass at Berkeley??

Hey, I want to take Calc 1 over the summer, but i don't want a letter grade. I want to do Pass/No Pass to protect my GPA. Is there any way this could possibly hurt me, or should I just go ahead and do it this way?

As long as your not majoring in Calc you can take it Pass/No pass.

I hear Calc is a good major though. You don’t want to lose the option of majoring in it.

My friend is majoring in that.

HAhahha empathy, be nice :D

I think Kelli is saying that she thinks I can take it pass/no pass only if I don’t need calc for my major, BUT…Is she right? haha

I’m thinking of double majoring with engineering, so I would kind of need calc for that.

QUESTION STANDS: Can I take it for Pass/No Pass???

I seriously doubt your abilities for engineering when you’re taking a beginners class like calc pass/no pass.

Doubling in engineering is going to be impossible if you haven’t done any LD math by now. Not having taken all 5 LD math courses (Calc I, II, III, and LA and ODE) is pretty ominous in itself, but it also implies you haven’t taken calculus based physics (Mech, Waves/Optics, E&M). That’s 8 additional LD courses (not a cake walk) + your UD first major coursework + your UD engineering major coursework; I’m not sure this is possible in 4 semesters, or even 6 semesters. In addition, you can’t transfer into the COE without completing the LD coursework, so you’ll be petitioning in your senior year at best.

I’m sorry if I sound snarky, I don’t mean to. I’m just trying to be blunt so you know what you’re getting into if you don’t already.

But to answer your question, no. If you want to major in engineering you have to do all major prereqs and technicals for a grade. Humanities can be done for P/NP though.

Hmmmm Ya perhaps engineering isn’t the right major for me. I can do math if I really try hard at it, but most of the time I just hate it. I dropped precalc before taking it again this semester, and even this semester I only have a B. I just have this awesome dream that once I get past all the math, there will be something creative at the end of the tunnel - the real stuff I love about mechanical engineering. Sadly, as I hate math, I don’t think engineers are ever free of it, so maybe I don’t belong there.

just the physics alone make engineering hard.

don’t worry that you have a B in pre-calc. In all honesty I thought Calc 1 was easier than pre-cal, just take it for a grade limits, derivatives and basic integrals are all pretty easy and if you’re a good student there is no reason calc 1 should kill your grade.

math 1a at berkeley is a bit different from your typical first year calculus course. i believe they do delta epsilon proofs which aren’t normally covered in a CCC level course.

^We covered that in our class… it was awful. hahaha but it was for extra credit on the exam.

It sounds like solidblu isn’t even good at math. Besides, you have YEARS of math ahead of you if you intend to double major in math or any form of engineering. You are talking like some kid in his first semester at a CC.

Might want to stay at CCC for another year or two and apply again for the engineering programs. I think this MAY be a good idea , assuming that you’ll probably have priority at your CCC by now , so you won’t have any problems getting classes.

It would be a doable semester to take just Calc and a Physics requirement. (and I believe there may be a comp class too , depending on the school)

btw what major did you get accepted for in the first place?

I say Cal won’t kill you but if you plan to double majoring in Engineer and afraid of math then Physics will murder you haha Also, how well did you in Trig? Calculus I and II are only hard if you don’t remember those trig identities by heart.

I would re-iterate what has been said already.

If you have not taken Calculus 1 yet you are much better off staying at C.C and finishing all the pre-reqs than trying to take it there and applying directly into engineering

[Simultaneous Degrees — UC Berkeley College of Engineering](http://coe.berkeley.edu/students/current-undergraduates/degree-options/simultaneous-degrees.html)

That is the policy for double majoring in engineering. It’s not quite as easy as L&S

"Applications must be submitted by the end of the sophomore year. "

not to mention completion of all pre-reqs and all future course must be completed in 8 semesters.

If you hadn’t done any upper division math or engineering classes you stand zero chance of being allowed to double major as a junior.

The fact that double majoring in engineering requires completion of forms by end of Sophmore year would suggest they don’t want transfer to do it. Considering we go in as juniors

I would assume it’s because Engineering is very competitive at UCB they don’t want people applying for L&S majors then backdooring their way into engineering
