Would it be worth it to send in my ACT score?

I took the ACT for the second time this past October, and I received a 35; however, my essay score is only a 9/12. Would it be worth it to send the ACT score in to colleges? Or should I retake?

Yes! Send the score. That is great. Good chancce you may go down of you retake.

Make sure you college wants the essay. Some don’t

What’s wrong with that excellent score. If you got rejected by any school, it is definitely not due to your ACT or writing score.

I’m not worried about my composite; it’s just that the ACT isn’t superscored, and my writing score is, from what I’ve heard, horrible.

You sure don’t need to worry about getting 9 in essay. What is your writing score with essay included?

My English subscore by itself is a 35; combined with writing (essay), it drops to 32. My subscores in math, science, and reading are 34, 34, and 36 respectively, so my composite with the combined writing/English would be a 34.

You are absolutely fine… good scores!

What’s considered a competitive writing score for the Ivies?

Look at the admissions statistics and see where you fall in terms of percentile. They may have a range of 31-33 middle… so you know if you have a 34-36 you are top 25% and if you have below 31, that you are bottom 25%. Obviously the higher your score, the better :-)

Ah, reread your question. I’m sure a 32 is fine :-). Certainly not low enough to be worth retaking.

It seems that for places like Duke/Harvard/etc. 8-10 on writing is the middle 50%. Eh.

I guess I’m okay in that regard. Although, if I take the SAT and do well on that (2300+), should I just send my SAT instead of my ACT?

They would both be comparable scores, so you could feel confident in sending either/both.

{delete}

@crazymonster: thanks!

Threads like these are why some people hate CC

wat

Most people would do anything to get a 35. I know you were asking about the essay score, but I don’t think the essay matters much.

Quick question–how did you get a 9 1/2? For official reporting reasons I was under the impression they only give you a whole number. Has this changed?

@bjdkin I’m assuming he means 9/12

The essay, I’ve heard, is largely ignored on both the ACT and SAT.
