I mean its all about your sleep schedule. If you have the discipline to go to bed early while all your friends are going to be up, then, yeah its a good thing. I see these crew kids get up MADDDDD early to row, and I'm impressed, but there is a certain satisfaction to rolling out of bed at 9 or 11 and less than 10 minutes later being on time for class with a breakfast. It's an art, (much easier for guys, but still an art). My record for the situation is 5 minutes. That was sick.

ugh, I am a complete night owl, but when I was making my schedule and went ahead and picked an 8'o clock speech class, thinking "Yeah, this'll get me off on the right foot Mndays, Wednesdays, and Fridays."

Now I'm just counting the days until the semester ends. Since the end of August, I have yet to get up before 7:40 except on days when I have to get ready for a speech. It is complete hell because the rest of my day just drones on because of it. And my professor is decent, but he doesn't merit my sleep-deprived attention. My optional Chem study hall (recitation) is at 8 on Thursdays as well, and the professor makes a big deal about how A students go to recitation. Considering I'm #1 in that class, though, I think I'll be fine.

So yeah, in that sense, unless the disparity is astronomically disproportionate between the two, I don't see how a better teacher could justify me feeling refreshed and rested for the day.

4:45 is just ridiculous, for a college student I mean.

I would say go for it if you have a chance to sleep during the day. I have stayed up until 5am when I had an 8am class working on a project, and then I just went back to my room and fell asleep afterwards. If not, then I would be weary about it.

By commute, if you mean drive, this could seriously be dangerous especially if you are not fully awake or alert. If you mean taking the bus, keep in mind that if you are sleep deprived you might sleep through your alarm/turn it off and go back to sleep and miss the bus. Therefore, miss the class. Im an architecture major and this has happened before to multiple students who commute for our 8 am studio class.

If this class is important ie. you have to pass in order to take another class in a specific order or something, then I GUESS I would do it.

But I teachers can make a big difference. I am borderline passing calculus right now because my professor is horrible.

I wouldn't take a 7:45 class for anything. I'm hardly surviving my 8:30 this semester, and I live five minutes from the class.
it really depends on you personally and how you deal with mornings...

Yes. I would.

How long a commute is this?

If you can be awake for class, then yes, do take it. Not only will you get a better prof, but you'll likely have fewer and better classmates as well (in general, only the more serious students take the early morning classes).

This all depends on how much of a morning person you are, and if the earlier professor is many degrees better than the later one. If you can manage to get to bed early and this professor is absolutely amazing, then go ahead and do it!

And even if you end up hating it, you'll at least know to never try something like that again!

I can barely get up at 9:00 for my 10:50am class. That would be hell for me, but if you can do it, then go for it I guess.

I decided to take the 11:30 class. HAHAHAHAH!!

Lucky you for finding one at 11:30! In the future with choices like this just think, a semester is only 15 weeks... not that bad, and to get up early for 15 weeks the payoff would be better grades - which count for your whole college career +some. I take an 8:30 am class and commute to school two days a week, I get up at 5am when normally I would have been going to bed for the night at 5am. Sure, it's a change, and I need coffee those mornings... but is it worth it? Yes! My teacher allows us to retake all the exams one time, which helps when I haven't seen chemistry much at all in my life. By winter break I will be sleeping off the hangover of exhaustion and I will be all better.

When I chose my schedule this semester I made sure I wouldn't have to wake up too early. Mon/Wed I have class starting at 11 and Tues/Thurs I start at 9:30. Friday at 12:30. But i live 10 minutes away so I can leave 15 minutes before class starts.

When you have to pull all nighters or close to them, having that extra time to sleep is nice. I remember back in high school you couldn't even call them all nighters because you had to be up by 6 am!!! Haha so glad those days are over.

I was in the same position this past semester, and had the choice between an 8am lecture (had to get up at 5:45, but the lecturer provided class notes) or a 5pm lecture (which would mean getting home at about 7/7:30pm, but would mean extra work as no notes were ever given).

I chose the early one, partly because of the notes, but also because I'm more of a morning person, and my timetable meant I finished twice a week at 11:50am, and had fridays off completely! So it was a good tradeoff between the early morning rise.
