These UNC kids sure get excited about sports and stuff. At NYU we would only get that big a crowd if there was some kind of hipster convention going on in the square, or they were giving out free PBR Daily Tar Heel - Video: Franklin Street: The Celebration Is this normal at other colleges? Do people really care about their school and sports like this? I want to go to a college that has school spirit!

Gooooo violets! or bobcats, whatever...ahahah :D

oh jeez i went to an NYU open house last year and the tour guide told us about the fighting violets haha. is it true that there’s some guy who wears or used to wear a green jumpsuit or whatever covered in purple “violets” to all of the sporting events? i told my gym teacher about that (she loves the NYU volleyball team) and she thought it was the most entertaining story ever.

well NYU students don’t go to sporting events so I wouldn’t know Chelsea, gosh :)

haha yep the mascot used to be a Violet, but then it became a bobcat since we had the first card catalog system in a library or something, and it was called the Bobst Catalog (bobst is the main library) which was shortened to BobCat and somehow it became our mascot. Ridiculous, i know. Besides, we’re still the Violets.

Do people care about their teams that much? Ummm yeah…I guess if you go to NYU this isn’t what you’re used to.

The Universities of Alabama, Nebraska, and Florida all had their annual spring games this weekend to mark the end of the the spring football practice season, and had 84,000, 77,000 and 65,000 fans respectively show up to watch. We’re talking about hordes of people coming out to watch a PRACTICE. At Nebraska, for the first time ever they charged admission - $10 for what previously had always been free. So UNC’s celebration of a national championship is impressive, but doesn’t approach the depths at which some fanbases support their teams.

One of my friends actually got arrested during that melee ;)

I was able to avoid too much trouble by stumbling around on Franklin Street and giving high fives to everyone I could find (including several police officers, it turns out). It was a great experience, one that I’ll def keep coming back for if we keep winning!

You obviously haven’t been to North Carolina during March Madness ;). People are absolutely nuts about basketball and the 'heels here. Every game at the Dean Dome is always sold out, and tickets for big games (like Duke) routinely sell for thousands of dollars. Its definitely an interesting experience.

I really wish we had that much school spirit, but it take time to get to that point, and I’m doing everything I can to move us into that direction. We had over 4,000 for our Spring game, which was a significant improvement. It was nice to have a few NFL players and a top high school prospect there too :)

LOL at the hipster convention and PBR. Why do people drink so much PBR?! It doesn’t even taste good. It used to be a redneck thing, now it’s hipster beer.

We are a very gay school, thank you very much. I hate how everyone on this site spazzes out and has to be so politically correct. The OP never said anything homophobic, she never made a gay joke, she said we have a lot of gays. Well, we do. So what? It means we’re not closeminded.

NYU does have some school spirit, but we show it in other ways. Our shows and performances are always sold out, it’s just our sports that are lacking. Not a very athletic school, I guess. I did go to a lot of volleyball games this semester, those were good. Also, you should go to our basketball games, people get excited about those. It’s nothing like UNC, and we don’t have a football team, but a lot of people go to basketball games. I went and was surprised how many people showed up, even to the women’s games.

I’m sorry if I offended you, but I never made any homophobic remarks. Like StarG pointed out, Purple is known as the “Gay pride” color. If you’ve ever seen a gay pride parade, you’ll notice lots of purple and rainbow banners. I made a joke linking NYU’s color and mascot - Violets - to the fact that our college has a reputation for attracting gay students, which, by the way, we’re proud of. Not every school can boast of being known for tolerance and diversity. To be honest, I think only a freakishly PC person could twist that around to being offensive.

lol leah…yeah i’ve never tried PBR, but it’s associated with hipsters somehow, I don’t know why they have a reputation for always drinking it.

I did go to a men’s basketball game once, and i’ve been to a gymnastic’s meet (my friend’s on the team). The gymnastics event was pretty empty, but I bet that’s true at most colleges. It’s not a major sport like football or something.

I never realized NYU had such a large gay population. hm. that’s kind of funny considering i just found out a few weeks ago that Fredonia (my school) has i think the second largest gay population of any of the SUNYs. i guess i should expect it, seeing as they’re both big into theatre and the arts. it’s awesome, really, especially since i come from a town where the majority of the people you meet are very close-minded and somewhat homophobic, to end up at a school where someone can come onto our campus to speak out against gays and it incites a gay rights protest of several hundred students and teachers. :)

haha ok. that’s a relief, for a minute I thought I had upset all the gays ;)

Yep, the theatre and arts schools usually have an active LGB community. I can’t imagine if someone came to our campus to speak against gays. Not that we really have a campus. Oh, one time some crazy evangelicals dressed up as Jesus and yelled about Christ saving us in the square and people just screamed at them. :)

For sure!!! I thought that my school had a crapload of school spirit (Michigan State), but after seeing/hearing about the UNC NCAA basketball celebration…geez. At my school we are “infamous” for cedarfest.

that’s awesome haha. the guy that came here was some minister or whatever and he basically forced his way onto all of the SUNY campuses (since we’re state property the school officials can’t tell him to leave) in an effort to provoke students into starting a riot. i heard someone punched him at one of the schools and he supposedly sued for it. with us it was just a bunch of people singing Journey songs and basically making so much noise that he couldn’t be heard at all.

We had an outspoken preacher get punched in the face on campus here at UNC, but the preacher declined to press charges. I’m not sure if that is the incident that you are referring to…

I heard about him coming on to SUNY Plattsburgh.
I wasn’t there since I’ve transferred, but read it online on Cardinal Points. Apparently, they didn’t take too kindly to his presence.
