Well, it's a huge school. Some predictable proportion of any school's alumni might go on to become famous. But with all due respect to UF, I must admit that I recognize very few names on those lists.

You probably don't want to look at this list: List of Harvard University people - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Haha WashDad. Just a little perspective, eh?

Most large public universities have lots of famous alum. People who think that one has to go to an Ivy or similar school in order to get excellent networking opportunities are deluded.

I say this as a Harvard grad. In my state, being a flagship state U grad provides far better networking than one would get by having gone to an Ivy, which all are very far away and have relatively few alum in my state. Virtually all of the top jobs in my state and city are held by graduates of flagship state U or our second best state public university.

The fact that my Harvard class contained students who became: a head of state, a lieutenant governor; a state supreme court justice , an ambassador, head of a large foundation, a Nobel Prize winner, and a well known comedian and possible future U.S. senator, has not helped me at all since not one of those people live anywhere near where I live, a place which really loves State U, and distrusts places like Ivies.

Distrusts Ivies? No one denies Harvard has the strongest alumni base.

I wouldn't be so quick on that one, actually. A large school with a good D1 football program, especially if it's a state school, is almost unbeatable in terms of alumni base. Though it of course depends on what you're measuring when you talk about a "strong alumni base."

"
No one denies Harvard has the strongest alumni base."

Perhaps when one is looking nationally that's true. However, when it comes to having the strongest alumni base in particular states, fields or cities, there are other schools (especially large public universities) that are far ahead of Harvard.

For instance, I doubt that Harvard's alumni base will do much for alums in Miss., where typically about 1-2 students go to Harvard each year -- from the entire state! If one wants good networking and plans to reside in Miss. after graduation, Ole Miss probably is the best place to go.

These guys would probably disagree about "strongest alumni base."
