Can you compare the schools for biomedical engineering and pre-med, and talk about the social aspects and college life

thanks

please..........

The education at RPI and MIT is top notch, dont know about WPI. I wouldn't go to either WPI or RPI because there are over 75% guys at each . Even though acamedics are more important that is just too much guys at one campus. MIT is internationally recognized and is about 60/40 and if you can get in you should definately go.

Saying WPI, RPI and MIT is like saying Babson, Bentley and Wharton! WPI and RPI, like Bentley and Babson, are very good and respected insitutions, but they don't really compare to MIT and Wharton.

Anyway, in terms of Biomedical Engineering, RPI and WPI both have reasonably respected BE programs, But aqgain, they are not quite as well respected as MIT.

Socially, RPI is located in Troy, NY, roughly a 3 hour drive from the closest major city. Troy itself is decent, but nothing to write home about. WPI is obviously located in Worcester, MA. That's less than an hour from Boston, but like Troy, Worcester is not that great. Neither school is know for having a lifely, fun or spirited atmosphere. MIT on the other hand is located within walking distance of some great Cambridge and Boston neighborhoods. And as somebody pointed out, the male to female ratio at MIT is significantly better than those at RPI and WPI. More importantly, MIT is sourrounded by Boston University and Harvard, which offer a huge variety of options. PRI and WPI are not surrounded by other major universities.

Rensselaer just open a brand spanking new $100M Biotech Reseach Center. They can go head to head with anyone for boimedical engineering, MIT included.

Some folks are clearly blinded by name recognition when it comes to MIT, et all (Ivies, for example). WPI has a very strong reputation among academics and professionals in the northeast. MIT certainly is different from WPI and is unquestionably of high quality. But WPI facilities (labs etc.) are also superior and relatively new.

Yes, the male-female ratio at WPI is whack. But that's an unfortunate and typical situation at many science departments (see the roiling debate at Harvard last year). The good news is, as part of the Worcester area college consortium, schools with better gender demographics are a few minutes away by the free bus shuttle. And you can easily visit Boston, if you have the time for a break from the killer work load.

Russell Sage is a women's college near RPI that evens out the male-female ratio somewhat.
