So... I was placed into ENGL004 and I got a letter saying that they highly recommend me to take summer bridge program in order to advance to ENGL 001A during school year. But when I checked the program, it costs over a $1000! Should I still take the summer bridge? or just take ENGL004 during school year?

Well, it kinda depends on your financial situation. It also depends on your schedule. Are you willing to pay one thousand dollars for a class? I don;t think you should worry too much about placing into English 004. You will catch up eventually.

The total cost is $4,265.00 with housing. Would it be easier to take this program or go through the english 004 and take english in the summer to catch up

they offer financial aid for summer bridge. not sure how much it will cover

Well, you should be able to find our how much finaid you will receive before making any decisions. If the price is not right, then I suggest you find an alternative. I heard eng4 is not an easy class. I have a friend that just took it at a community college (which I assume would be easier).

hmmm… is it ok if I just take it during school year since I have no time for it? I actually planned to go traveling this summer with my friends T_T

it might actually be easier to take it in the summer since your taking a 11 or so week class in 7 weeks as oppose to having the full 11 weeks and 2 or 3 more classes and other stuff bogging you down.

Well, of course it’s okay if you taking during the school year. It’s your education, so it’s your decision…

One of my friends is a really good writer… but she got placed in Eng4 and had to do a lot of unnecessary work in the class… She ended up with a B or C… I don’t remember… but she got better grades in eng1a and eng1b.

Really? is ENGL004 really harder than ENGL 1A and 1B? how hard is it and what do they usually do?

Grammar and a bunch of unnecessary work.

Eng4 teachers are REALLY picky with grammar. The other eng class are usually more forgiving (but it depends on the professor)… It’s not necessarily harder, but they do grade harder… and you have to do outlines, worksheets, etc. I THINK. You do have homework. Eng1a, 1b, 1c classes usually just consists of reading and turning in essays.

Thanks for your answers jenuwin01!
Last question, when I went to the Bear Facts Orientation, we got to choose classes but not professors
So… are freshmen not allowed to choose professors in their first year? When I was trying to choose my classes, it says “The Staff” on every class’ instructor information.

Oh… it’s like that sometimes. Check back before school starts. They might show it. If I’m correct, I didn’t know who my English teacher was in the beginning. Then, when I checked back I saw the names and started to look at their ratings on ratemyprofessor.com… and switched to another class haha.

Your answers really helped! Thanks for answering all my questions jenuwin01! you are so genuine!

how long do you have to switch to another class, not just flat out drop it. oh and by the way you can choose your professor if you decide to go summer, so go for the “good” teacher haha.

haha no problem, linoch.

[Schedule of Classes - About Enrollment](<a href=“Select a Term”>Select a Term)

This is a very useful calendar to refer to when you have questions about dates (: just google UCR calendar haha

First day of school = 9/23
Last day to drop = 10/8 (which I think is also the last day to switch classes…)

I think there’s make up enrollment before school starts… so, you have time to switch/drop classes between that time period til 10/8 . It’s the first two weeks because… people start taking midterms and such on the third or fourth week. If you switch on the last day, you would have missed a lot of lectures and what not… kinda hard to catch up in some classes.

i see thanks. hopefully i get the teacher i want the first time round.
