WTP MIT @ 2016

My stats:
GPA: 3.9
SAT: 2300 (800 CR, 770 M, 730 W)
PSAT: 1520
APs: AP Calc BC, AP Physics 1, AP World History, AP Chemistry (all this year; previous courses have been honors because of school)
ECs: a form of Science Bowl, a performing arts thing, officer of a science club, a writing thing (wrote about this for the extracurricular essay), Model UN (awk I’m being super vague with this but I know people on CC so)
Employment: Worked in a research lab last summer + presented research at a conference, math/science teacher for a tutoring organization
Recs: Both of my teachers like me a lot, so I’m pretty sure they were good.
Essays: All of them except the challenges one were really good; the challenges one was mediocre but it talked about a serious topic.

Ahh so excited!!!

Also, does anyone know if we’ll have access to MIT’s libraries? College libraries are amazing <3

@asmith127 I don’t remember what exactly I put in the application, but here goes nothing:
Stats-
GPA: 4.783 (weighted), 4.0 (unweighted)
SAT: 2310 (750 CR, 800 MATH, 760 W)
PSAT: 1450
APs: this year- BC Calc, English Lang/comp, Chem, Physics 2C Mech+E/M, US History, French
Last year- Microeconomics (5), Biology (5)
Extra Curriculars: Cancer research (going to ISEF), science bowl, science Olympiad (captain), STEMinism, Math League, Dance, Tutor (both paid and volunteer), etc.
Essays: Wrote about my cancer research (impact), I think I was funny for two of my essays, problem essay was quite personal
Recs: pretty good, I think, but I didn’t read them, so idk

@tonystarkofwinterfell I hope so, but the info packet did say that we don’t have access to many facilities

Rejected :frowning: and I’m really upset because this was my last summer program. My stats are extremely similar to the ones just posted, so I’m starting to think my essays/teacher recs sucked or they just didn’t like me. I chose teachers who I work very closely with and who have a high opinion of me. I also spent a lot of time writing my essays and was really proud of the final product. I applied for ME though which I know is more selective :confused: any suggestions or tips on how to improve in future apps?

Accepted to EECS! I am so happy I could cry lol. I only applied for the EECS track because I assumed my robotics, ecolancer, and CAD experience made me overqualified and if not so, then I’d rather give someone else a chance to experience all those wonderful things :). I normally wouldn’t post my stats but CC seems like the exception, and hey, if it helps anyone

GPA: 4.5 weighted (although I moved to a high school w/ a different GPA system so I’m not sure how this number was calculated exactly)
SAT: 2270 (at the time I sent in the application)
PSAT: 1510
AP’s: US History, Chemistry, Physics 1, Chinese, Language and Composition
Extracurriculars: robotics, ecolancers, science league team, dance, volleyball middle hitter, math/science tutor, table tennis, Science National Honor Society Project Director
recs: my teachers liked me but I am definitely not among the brightest they’ve ever had or anything like that

I got rejected! I am so disappointed and I have no clue what to do this summer.

@penguin8910 ahh congrats!!
Just curious… Do you mean ME? Because EECS is the track for people with “no experience.” I initially was planning on applying to EECS but then was told that my “engineering experience” (an intro programming class) was too much so I had to do ME…

@tauisgood honestly when programs are this competitive it’s a matter of luck. I submitted variations of the same essays to all the programs I applied to, and I was outright rejected from all of them except for this one.

@fantasyreader email professors?

@tonystarkofwinterfell @penguin8910 Do you guys have a Facebook? We could create a group for this year’s WTP

Wait listed. did any one else get waitlisted? does anyone know the general chance of admittance from the waitlist?

@happyalldatime I have a Facebook, but I’m not sure if we’re supposed to wait for the RAs to create an FB group or if we’re just supposed to create our own. (However, if you PM me, I can friend you!)

@schoolisfun3 People are usually admitted from the waitlist, I think; @abbiejlee was admitted off of it last year! I have a friend who applied (with better stats than me tbh), but if she got in, she’s not going (she’s going to another program), so there’s still hope!

waitlisted… :confused:

Accepted for ME track!

Congrats!! @happyalldatime @tonystarkofwinterfell @penguin8910

Woaw. If I read your “stats” before, I wonder if I would have still applied to the program…

@artsciencefood I’m sure yours are great (:

(haHAha I should probably stop being happy about WTP and start studying for my physics final because my grade in the class is very borderline oops) (by the way I’m very bad at building stuff so that may be a problem)

@tauisgood Thank you! And I think I qualify as having no experience in computer science. I never took a programming class before in my life. I don’t even know how to make “hello world” display in text, which is the most basic thing to do. XD I assumed that if WTP was the kind of program that aimed to introduce girls to new things, then I wouldn’t be a very good fit for the ME track w/ my robotics background (I am a primary builder and CADer on the team). That’s why I applied to EECS. I hope that cleared it up a little.

@schoolisfun3 I don’t know exactly what your chances are but hopefully the wait won’t be too long since WTP told the admitted students to confirm their attendance by May 2. Good luck :slight_smile:

@tonystarkofwinterfell and @happyalldatime I do in fact have a fb. PM me! And btw I love both of your usernames very very much.

@artsciencefood While I was writing my stats here it occurred to me that none of the stats include anything I considered a major aspect of my app. None of it sets me apart or tells anything about me as a person. They’re just numbers. You probably got admitted based on other stuff :slight_smile:

@penguin8910 @artsciencefood @tonystarkofwinterfell
Have you all decided to go to WTP?

Yup! I really want to do something residential this summer.

@schoolisfun @tonystarkofwinterfell Yes! I got in off the waitlist and so did another one of my friends (and we are both MIT 2020 so don’t worry about it). Because their notification date is so late, some girls accept spots in other programs before they hear back from WTP.

@tonystarkofwinterfell :slight_smile: I hope your finals went well.

@penguin8910 Probably :slight_smile:

@happyalldatime Yes. I presume I will see you as well. :slight_smile:

@abbiejlee Woaw. I’m happy for you!
I just want to take time and thank you because your blog is what really motivated me to apply to the program… I already feel like it’s one of the best decisions I’ve made so far.
