WUSTL 2019 RD

@FriendlyNerd888‌ merit? Or need based aid? Interesting. Travel grant and overnight. No dinner.

@MomTwo2‌

It was merit! I believe the dinner was part of some type of event for students who received the merit scholarship that she did.

My son got an acceptance at WashU. While Washu is ranked 14, is it really good? Not many people seem to have heard about it in India.

Should we seriously consider WashU even if we get NYU Stern or Clarmont Mckenna?

@IndianPedro‌ What is the intended major?

finance with minor in computer science

my son is passionate about economics

@IndianPedro‌ : just my opinion, however, Stern school of business, if that is where you get accepted, has a good reputation, and is well known (brand name). For an interest in business/ finance, being in NYC, assuming as an international you can get internships, would also be a plus. My cousin is an adjunct faculty at Stern and speaks well of the school (and she can be very critical). She teaches an undergraduate writing course for biz majors. Had you said he was interested in pre med or sciences, then Wash U would be a great place to go. My son has a good friend who is a freshman there. The Wash U campus is beautiful (NYC is gritty…and a lot of the buildings at NYU are architecturally nice, but shabby inside…although the neighborhood is vibrant). I don’t know much about Claremont McKenna…it is part of a consortium of schools, Harvey Mudd being one…and HM is tops in engineering…but outside of the US, and especially the West Coast, probably not so well known. We live on the East coast (NY metro area), so there is a bit of a bias, but if your son is moving back to India, having the recognizable Stern brand is likely important…and even in the US, my guess is that it opens doors, has a good network for alumni/careers…esp if he is hoping to stay in the US and work in NYC.

Thank you so much. That was really helpful. He has excellent stats and a strong application. Fingers crossed for other outcomes - Yale, Upenn, NYU Stern, NW, Claremont and Columbia

@IndianPedro There are many really good schools in the world and not everyone has heard of them either. I’ve never heard of Harvey Mudd, Claremont McKenna, etc. So it is not uncommon that you haven’t heard of XYZ. Not everyone has. That’s normal.
