@TytoAlba that is true about loans versus grants but again if you go onto net price calculators for each school you should know that ahead of time what the financial aid package will be and that includes grants vrs loans . None of this should be a surprise if you do your homework with the online NPC
Those are the exceptions to the rule. We’re talking the 80%, not the 20%. I know ED kids who crossed their fingers, got into schools they could not afford (without taking a massive loan package offered by the school) and then could not get out of it without major effort, by which time their other options dried up.
No one should apply Ed unless they are sure they can afford the school based on npc . IF a school doesn’t have npc and a parent is unsure of FA package and their ability to pay or willingness to take out loans they should not apply Ed. No one should count on merit based aid especially at schools like wash u
I heard WashU scholarship notifications come out this week.
@Solar7Flare is it confirmed?
I am a current scholar at Washington University in St. Louis. The decisions should be coming out within the next week or so, but I wanted to clarify a few things.
- People who apply ED can apply or Merit aid as well but they find out with everyone else.
- For some scholarship being a finalist secures you at least some money, for others it does not and the finalist weekend is competitive to an extent.
- If anyone says they were awarded "merit" aid during ED application or not through one of the list scholarships, they are mistaken and were actually given Financial Aid of some sorts (WashU does not provide any non-programmatic merit aid).
- ED accepted applicants CAN and DO get scholarships (I know multiple)
- There are not automatic consideration scholarships, they all entail separate essays/applications.
- All finalists interview (even if your program has you guaranteed a scholarship): this is the reason that they fly you out!
For anyone still wondering when they will come out (including myself), after looking at recent threads, these have been the past release dates in the last few years for at least some of the scholarships:

I have a couple questions…If you get a scholarship can you assume you got accepted?
Also, do we also hear from University Scholars Program in Medicine at the same time as scholarships?
@VaishS based on previous posts, I think the general consensus is that if you get a scholarship you are automatically admitted. And yes I think the results come out the same time, again based on previous threads
ok thanks! @GloriaDoe
do we think they will notify people by phone or update the portal all at once?
@16elir Based on past threads they notify first by phone (unless you’re international it seems) and then update the portal up to a day later.
Sorry if this was already asked, but to they also let you know it you didn’t make it as a finalist?
@an1620 Yes; a few years ago they began notifying those who did not receive a scholarship through the portal.
Here are some links if you need some:
Anyone know if the smaller scholarships that don’t require interviews, like the Entrepreneurial Scholars Program, hear back at the same time as the other ones that do require interviews?
@Adele123 It seems like they should be notified by mid-march according to their website, but past threads point towards a similar time as the regular scholarship notifications (basically usually late february).
These links are for the Entrepreneurial Scholars Program.

and
So there is a chance we’ll find out today? Or do they usually call people on Fridays?
@GloriaDoe There is a chance - last year was Monday/Presidents day when people began posting whether or not they received a scholarship.
So if we don’t get the scholarship, it doesn’t mean we are rejected from the university as well right?
@ASAP123 Right. There are way less scholarships given than the number of students that are admitted.
