@sscb205 @GloriaDoe are both right. On the website, it says there are 8 selected for each selected with a half split between full and half tuition. But I don’t think there would only be 8 finalists they would choose. What if they invited around 10-15 people for each scholarship and picked out 8? It’s just more speculation lol, but it could be possible.
Does wash u notify people during the weekend?
I’m not understanding the question.
You mean what do they do with ED students who have already accepted an offer and applied for a scholarship?
@GloriaDoe I’m not sure. I haven’t found anything on their website that says what time the scholarship decisions come out
@chicagosportsfn - Do they give any scholarships to ED admits at the time of admission?
@texasspg No, the ED admits are in the same boat as we are. We all find out around the same time frame
Yikes, just got back my first semester grades . . . no chance for a scholarship now, let alone admission
@snapapp - interesting. An ED admit parent told me that that they got a half tuition scholarship just by asking but this was 7 years ago. I wonder what it was back then but I had always assumed ED admits got some merit scholarships also with their admission.
So it sounds like no merit scholarships are distributed to ED admits at the time of the admission. So whoever is admitted has to decide strictly based on their FA package?
@texaspg
I am an ED admit this year and before applying ED an admissions counselor at wash u told me that if I was counting on merit scholarships, then ED was not for me because I’m not guaranteed any scholarship. The only way you can get out of ED is if you can prove that you can’t afford the school and that can be hard to do(based on what I’ve heard, maybe I’m wrong)
Also, apparently some scholarships you have to interview for( danforth, rodriguez, ervin)and some you automatically get( engineering) or that is what I understood from their website
@GloriaDoe So how did you decide to keep your admission? Did they give you enough FA?
It sounds like if someone applies ED, they should expect to pay whatever the school says they need to and then may be hope for a scholarship to reduce the burden if they want to pay less.
My understanding is that Wash U gives some smaller merit awards for which you are automatically considered when you submit your application. The big scholarships - Moog, Rodriguez, etc. require a separate application and a total of 16 full tuition awards (4 per named scholarship) are offered. So the odds are very low.
I am not sure if ED students are considered for the smaller merit awards or not. They are certainly eligible to apply for the big ones and take their chances. But they’d have to agree to admission long before finding out about the large awards.
Rice created a set of scholarships specific to ED recently and they were sending mailers stating that people need to apply ED if they want to be considered for those.
I wonder which other schools have a policy to consider merit during ED if they are giving out merit scholarships.
@texaspg I’ve gotten no FA as of right now. Yeah if you apply ED you need to be prepared to pay full price
@mamaedefamilia I haven’t heard anything about scholarships you are automatically considered for, a counselor told me you have to apply for all the scholarships. And I think there are more than 16 full or partial tuition scholarships
@GloriaDoe Go back to the accepted students threads on CC for the last couple of years. Some of the students will say something like “I got accepted with a 13K scholarship.” It’s possible that I may be confusing this with another university but take a look.
To clarify, I did not say there are only 16 full or partial tuition scholarships. I said there are a total of 16 full tuition offers for the four named scholarships.
My child did not apply ED to wash univ., but my understanding is yes its very hard to get out of ED agreements not just to wash univ but anywhere. With Net price calculators and Expected parent contributions that parents/students are now able to calculate online ahead of ED or RD agreements, at nearly every school, one should not apply ED to any school if they are not prepared to pay the expected parent contribution that they see when they do the calculations . Its pretty easy to know ahead of time what your expected Financial aid package is. You cant apply ED and count on getting these highly selective merit scholarships. I really don’t understand why ED students/parents would apply ED if they are not prepared to pay the EPC. I guess if financial circumstances change after student applies(parent gets sick, death in family, looses job, etc) than everything changes and you probably can get out of an ED agreement but other than that very hard as that is why ED is binding and you get an advantage in the application process.
As far as Merit aid, I think Wash Univ. is like most highly selective schools that say they meet 100 percent of demonstrated FINANCIAL NEED in grants/loans but merit aid is far and few between. With thousands applying to these merit scholarships specifically looking at Wash Univ and it looks like about 100 invited for finalist really not counting on it. I think Wash Univ is like most highly selective schools they don’t need to throw a lot of merit aid around to fill their classes and reserve their money to meet 100 percent of demonstrated financial need.
I think sometimes students use the words merit aid and financial aid interchangeably so on earlier threads when someone said they got a 13000 scholarship they could have meant FA.
Yes got a ton of mail from Rice about the merit awards for ED students. I think they are an outlier with this.
@momof2eagles I agree with you, I think when you are accepted ED they meet 100%of your financial need but you are not automatically considered for any academic scholarship. When you apply ED you need to make sure you know what FA you qualify for. In some cases you may not qualify for any FA but wash u is still very expensive
100% of your financial needs can mean they will LOAN you all the money you need. That sounds horrifying to me.
Why should ANY school offer you merit aid if you applied ED? They don’t have to. You showed your hand. Gotcha!
@TytoAlba that is true except I know ED applicants with full tuition scholarships
