Yah It's Another Chance Me!!

Im so sorry for this guys but I just needed a unbiased opinion before I apply early admission to Harvard. So lets start with me. Im an African American with an income bracket of less then 45,000 a year. That income bracket didn’t stop me from working as hard as I could in High School. I got a 4.0 uw gpa and a 2400 SAT score. My poor high school could only offer about 7 AP courses, so I self studied the majority of my AP classes. Still waiting for some scores but I got all 5s on them EXCEPT a 4 in computer science. That was a real bummer for me. I tutor people like me and I strive to make a difference in my getto South Philadelphia neighborhood. Oh and I also was an ISEF finalist, but I didn’t win that much awards at ISEF, though Im going to try again this year. Im in National Honor Society but my schools chapter doesn’t do much so I don’t think I should mention that. Anyways heres my stats in a list for:

2400 SAT
800 SAT US, 800 SAT Math 2, 800 SAT Chem, 800 SAT Bio, 800 SAT Calc. 770 SAT Physics :frowning:
Top 1-3% GPA in school
AP US, AP Bio, AP Chem, AP Micro, AP Macro, AP Lang, AP Stats, AP computer science
AP Physics C, AP US Gov, AP Lit, AP Calc BC,

Honors: National Merit Finalist, National Honor Society,

Extracurriculars:

  1. Research (9th grade-)
Publications- 1 co-author in Human Molecular Genetics,
    Intel ISEF 3 times- 9th grade Student Observer, 10th + 11th Finalist
Presented research posters 3 times at International Spinal Muscular Atrophy research meeting.
Invited to give a seminar talk for graduate students on the research project.
Worked 4 years at one lab; during that time, interned for short periods at 2 other labs
Attended a program at a local hospital for gifted high school students, studying molecular biology of cancer.

  2. Neuroscience writer for the National High School Journal of Science (10th grade-)

  3. Robotics

  4. Base Performance (5th grade-)

  5. Varsity tenis

  6. United Nations

  7. Umm, I got some others but there not at the top of my mention list

Obviously one can see that I want to become a doctor, a neurosurgeon to be exact. And since were on the topic, I was wondering: I have a scholarship already full ride, should I mention my income bracket to harvard. I don’t really trust in need-blind.

Volunteering is my SUPER strong suit. In total I think I volunteered more than 2000 hours through high school. I try to do atlas an hour every day. Be it at the hospital, tutoring, charity, etc.

I take college courses at my local community college and by the end of this year I should have an associates degree in human biology.

My essay is pretty good. I made my english professor at the community college read it and she cried. It was quite a depressing story.

Anything else that I remember and Ill be sure to post it. Thank you

OH EMPLOYMENT: I worked quite a lot over my years. Since I was 7 actually. I have internships at various hospitals and clinics as well.

It looks so perfect that it can’t be real. I would totally doubt the “working since I was 7,” but my granddad has worked for 75 years more or less continuously.

Schools would help.

Everything, EVERYTHING Harvard could possibly want, you have… so much so that I’m almost questioning if someone like this really exists. But, if everything you said is 100% true, have fun at Harvard!

To respond to awesomepolyglot I worked since I was 7 to help support my family. Lol don’t worry, I wasn’t breaking any child labor laws. I would just help with my dad as a stocker, since he couldn’t hire one himself. Thanks for bringing that up. I almost forgot about child labor. So to be more accurate, I started working a paid job when I was 13 and 1/2. Umm so like in 7th grade I think. It was as a tutor at the local library.

So to respond to my questions: Should I apply early decision to harvard, and should I tell them about my income bracket?

bump

The early admission deadline already passed.

oops, gosh I meant to say regular decision. Just reread my post, ugh. Is there any way to change that or should I repost.

EDITED VERSION:

Im so sorry for this guys but I just needed a unbiased opinion before I apply REGULAR admission to Harvard. Im going to apply either way but just wanted to know were I stand among applicants. So lets start with me. Im an African American with an income bracket of less then 45,000 a year. That income bracket didn’t stop me from working as hard as I could in High School. Yeah you’re really really really likely to get in regular decision to any school you want, including Harvard.

Its a real bummer, god. I follow my college councilors advice when she says play it safe an apply early admission to a college that you are happy with but is not such a reach and end up applying to Temple. Now everyone here is telling me I have a likely chance of getting into Harvard. That college councilor gave no help toward this whole process and … ugh so frustrating. If I just followed my instincts and applied early to Harvard my chances would have increased. At least the Temple early decision isn’t binding.

Also do mention your income bracket. You’ll be a shoo in as an underprivileged minority with a stellar profile.

bump…

This might be annoying but bump

You have a better chance to get into elite schools like Harvard than most applicants, but I subscribe to the idea that – even though you have wonderful stats, ECs and a powerful hook – schools like Harvard are not a slam dunk for anyone.

So to be safe, I suggest you apply to multiple schools. The question of how many is up to you, but if I were you I’d research the following, and apply to three or four of them… maybe even five… from the following list:

Princeton
Yale
Stanford
MIT
Williams (if you are open to LACs…)
Amherst (LAC)
Columbia
UChicago
Penn
Pomona (LAC)
Swarthmore (LAC)
Duke
Dartmouth
Brown
Cornell
Northwestern

And just in case you are fairly unlucky and do not get into one of the above, maybe send in a couple of apps from the following list:

Cal-Berkeley
Michigan
UVA
Notre Dame
Vanderbilt
Georgetown
Johns Hopkins
WUSTL
Emory
Carnegie Mellon
Boston College
Tufts
USC
NYU
Middlebury/Bowdoin/Haverford/Carleton (LACs)

And, finally, everyone needs a safety. This could be your (or a) state flagship U or a decent private school that offers a lot of merit or need-based aid. It should be a school you wouldn’t mind attending, a school you can afford, and a school that – beyond doubt – you will get into.

One final thing to keep in mind for med school is that med schools care most (as many have said here) about MCAT score and GPA – not so much where you went to school. Make sure, wherever you go, that you take a course load that will allow you to both (obviously) learn, but also to earn a high GPA for med school consideration.

It is totally OK to go to a state school for the purposes of earning a high GPA for med school consideration. Quality possibilities abound.

Good luck!

Thank you Prezbucky, Ill sure be researching these schools up. I really don’t have affordability on my mind at all though. Im lucky enough to have a scholarship full ride (from the Delaware Science Fair if any one is interested, it is awarded to those that acquire a gold, silver, or bronze metal. To get one of these metals you have to be at the top 3 projects)

I think you have everything Harvard would want. Financial Aid at Harvard isn’t a problem, as I think you’ll get free tuition since you are under 60k per year. Anyway, why did you go with Temple ED?

It seems that you would be the perfect applicant if this resume was legit, but it seems as though it’s not. On this thread and other threads I’ve seen plenty of grammatical errors, so many that I have a hard time believing you could even get remotely near an 800 W score. That being said, if it is in fact legit, you have great odds.
